Cambridge United away: anyone been?

I've visited this ground quite a few times and rather liked it. Mind you, I hope I never have to go back again!

Anyone else been?

I went quite a few years ago and seem to remember they had Timmy Mallet on as half time 'entertainment' which obviously lost it points.

Proper old skool ground though.

Been with Town a few times, last one was a pre-season friendly. Nice ground, away end near some allotments. I like the Abbey Stadium!

I used to live in Cambridge so been there a few times- it's okay though not particularly a stand out ground for me. There was a standing enclosure (the Habbin Stand or something?) that got pretty lively. The game I most remember was a 3-0 trouncing of Crystal Palace in the Cup, on a Friday night. Palace were embarrassingly bad that night.

Cambridge City's Milton Road ground is far weirder- it seems to be an afterthought in an industrial estate car park. Seen both Merthyr and Newport County there (the infamous 6-5 Newport victory).

Been twice I think, the first time I got anti-climb paint all over my jacket from the fences at the front of the away end.

The second time I can't really remember anything particular happening.

Both times would have been early to mid nineties, I expect.

The closest I've been recently was Histon where we were knocked out of the cup last season (I think).

Been once, although it wasn't an away trip - I went with a mate who was a Cambridge fan. Early 90s I guess. Bit of a dump of a ground but I've seen worse.

As soon as I saw the thread title and the name of the OP my first reaction was that you would never have to go there again, but whilst I understand your wish never to go there again, and I hope to god you never have to, except in the FA Cup, I also think there is something sad about that. These trips will always hold more affection than, god willing, the trips which await us next season to places like OT,Emirates etc.

I heard some Newcastle fans talking on the radio this morning saying how their season in the Championship had been a wake up call for the club, but that for the fans there had been something special about playing teams like Scunthorpe and Peterborough, and whilst I realise that they would much prefer trips to the Premier clubs they have become accustomed to visiting, I wouldn't mind betting that they have derived an enormous amount of pleasure from visiting some of the traditional lower league venues.

If Cardiff were to reach the giddy heights of the EPL, and stay there for more than a season, I for one would miss the fixtures against Swansea, Bristol City and their ilk. Maybe we would have to inaugarate a pre season "friendly" competition against our more traditional opponents.

My home ground (any other U's on here?) and won't hear a word against the Wembley of the Fens - always feel sorry for the away fans since they built the new stand not being able to stand on the terraces.
And a vintage electronic scoreboard!
Sadly no more, though it did remain for about 5 years with all its pixels (?) burned out as a mocking reminder of better times.

Even worse, that would probably have been 'Krazy Kevin', the local low-budget equivalent. Dark days...

I went twice this season - a 4-3 win in the league (coming back from 3-0 down) and a 3-1 loss in the FA Trophy.

The ground isn't much to write home about but it does still have terracing for away fans alongside the pitch. Cambridge has some of the best pubs around and is therefore a cracking day out. 45 mins from London too.

E2A: The only minus point of our visit this season was the complete overreaction of the police to hoards of Luton fans. They mistook a bit of friendly banter and singing between us and the Cambridge fans as hooliganism. One policeman cut his finger somehow....leading to the local newspapers claiming Luton fans had stabbed a copper

I used to go to Cambridge City back when I was in Cambridge. That made United look posh. They used an old record player to play Fight of the Bumblebee when they scored. Until one day that it wound down horribly whilst playing and then they never played it again.

I like a ground in which I can swap ends at half time. And chat with the opposition goalkeeper whilst his team are on the attack.

And believe me, the opposition team were pretty much ALWAYS on the attack.
