Bus driver uppercuts unruly female passenger in Ohio

I have never worked as a bus driver and I do not know about the various options open to them.

If he had a slidey glass door that could whoosh upwards and protect him from further assaults / spit then maybe he could use that, but that would leave ranty, spitting, violent girl with other innocent passengers.

Maybe he didn't have a whooshy protective glass door?

People seem to assume that this girl was a sweet delicate little flower, when, from the video it appears that she is someone who enjoys confrontation and drama, has a potty mouth and who cannot control her violent impulses.

I have witnessed several assaults on bus drivers over the years and they do get more than their fair share of nonsense.

This guy was just mad as hell and not going to take it any more.
Lot of words to say precisely nothing. I'll ask again

Let's assume that she did act as she did - now what range of options are open for the 59 year old experienced man to take against the mouthy little teenager.

what protection is needed from someone who is just, as you describe it, mouthing off?
good focus change though.

and by the way, a 25 year old who has assaulted the driver while he's at the wheel is not a

who is
No focus change - and that one, none. Look at her. Seriously, look at her. My fucking cat could take her.

His reaction was other the top but her gender / size are irrelevant. If you don't want to run the risk of being hit don't spit in someones face

Now you see your comment could be interpreted as sexist.

You cannot attribute sugar and spice to girls and slugs and snails to boys as if it was real.

Some kids boys and girls, are extremely dangerous to innocent people. I don't know why but buses and cinemas seem to bring out the worst in them at least IME. Obviously lots of young people are lovely and usually polite, some are troubled and this girl is probably troubled, granted. She does not appear to be a girl who is a stranger to violence and aggression. She looks like she's seen a fair few fights and is used to getting her own way by being aggressive.

Personally my worst nightmare re being attacked / robbed in the street is young kids. They are more likely to carry knives than older people and whatever you do to fight them off / protect yourself will easily land you in trouble.

This girl was behaving in an extremely dangerous and aggressive way, if she's anything like some of the kids round here the chances are she could be carrying a knife.

Now if, after the uppercut she was wearing a neck brace, lacking teeth and her face all swollen then the situation would be different and I would feel very differently about it.

That driver knew how to throw a punch, he had probably had some boxing training at some point and if he had intended to really hurt her he could have done. As it was he gave her a comfortable ride that looked dramatic but, as you can all see from the videos, didn't do her any serious injury.

I would be very interested to know how the passengers in the bus who didn't know either of them felt about it.

Would peeps think his actions were disporportionate if this had been a younger/smaller man?
Is he out of order because he was at work of the time?

Waffling on. Don't you train in some martial art?

And no, between her going to the cab, him stopping there was enough time for him to come up with some options. You've had all day, so i ask again:

Its a massive over reaction by the bus driver, quite simple really. Whilst she's only got herself to blame his reaction was massivly out of scale, basically he lost it and will have to suffer the consequences, it was not self defence it was clear retribution.

If she was that big a problem all he had to do was simply pull the bus over and call the police.

.
Eh? :D I take all your other points and appreciate your perspective but I don't think speculating this way is helpful or necessary.

I believe pathetic non-threatening mouthy fucks should be dealt with without weighing them, trying to get you feet distance up and trying to deliver a teeth-smasher yes.
which is what I've said and you've called me sexist ....

you know when you're in one of these moods, Bono, you should stay away from the pay and spray...

Really?? I think he was very very lucky he didn't put her in hospital, or worse, with such a punch!!

Quite, he missed, she got lucky as did he because if he connected properly he would be looking at a serious charge.

Yeah but he was joking garf. The tone of some of the comments has suggested that to say its wrong for a big man to hit a small woman is somehow sexist.

 That's funny, cos to me it looked like he punched her as hard as he could but she luckily got off lightly. People have been killed by someone getting a un/lucky punch in the face before.

and 'he gave her a comfortable ride' ?? worrying language there tbh llb.

how about it's wrong for anyone of any size or gender to resort to physical violence against others, what are we Neanderthals who need to beat our chests and pick up fucking clubs and rocks to 'win' an argument...

the lady appears to have been a dick from what we can see (no context to the whole argument from the video I've watched just that she's being a dick at that time) it happens alot, if you've used buses in London you'll come accross it at least once a week where someone acts like a dick towards the driver...

I've yet to see even when it's quite bad the driver think I know what'll solve this punching them in the head and attacking them...

In what world is that the sane fucking option...

Hey you sales girl you dodn't get the right teashirt I wanted smack...

hey you pharmacist do these look like muthafucking suppositories to you??? pow...

seriously...

this thread is great, all the hardmen and women who have just been pushed too far are coming out of the woodwork

It's language used in martial arts training. If you hit someone in such and such a way or with a certain part of the arm, then you give them a comfortable ride, which is not what you are supposed to do if you want to hurt them.

If I'm training applications with someone and they are doing it wrong I'll say something like "oh thanks that was really comfortable" - obviously not to the bigger, scarier people. ;)
