Boxster

dessiato

4 years and I still cry sometimes
I've fancied one for a while. I haven't driven Porsche for a few years. At the moment I have the spare cash to buy an older one and use as a second car. But, should I? Mrs D has said we have the money if I really want to, but is reiterating her "but we need something sensible"

I really don't fancy a 911, and very much fancy the idea of a small, 2 seater convertible for high days and holidays.

I fancy one in yellow or red.

They're supposed to be alright, but everyone still thinks (a) "hairdresser car" and (b) "couldn't afford a 911". I'm neither suggesting they're right, or that you should care, but there you are.

What do you want it for? Plenty of other IMO better options like the MX-5, MR2, Elise etc.

Get a DB5 ffs... Mind you, I guess models in good working order could be quite a bit of money...

I work with someone who has one and he loves it. Cars like that aren't bought with sense in mind anyway, if it's what you want then go for it.

My wife has had one for a couple of years without any problems at all , its not even expensive to insure if you are an olden , sailed through two MOTs and its parked outside , a good everyday car unless you need to go to the tip .

If you're getting a first gen. don't get a TipTronic one under any circumstances. If it's second or third gen. get a PDK. A 2009-2011 3.4 PDK would be the pick of the litter in my opinion. Boxsters are a great car with an unfortunate image, sort of the opposite of a 911.

had 911s and have driven boxsters - if you have no kids/ serious luggage to heft about, then I would pile into a boxster tomorrow( asuming I was working again obvs). A few years ago, whilst bored at work, I mapped the prices of 2nd hand boxsters to a raft of economic indicators over a year or two - they are incredible value if you buy them when the economy is on its arse. As above, dont go for tips/any fancy transmission or loud colours if you want to think about resale.theres plenty about as well - again, as above they have an undeserved image

And enjoy your visit to the nearest hedge.

bah, if you think about your driving and default to basics ( look at the bend/ slow in/ control / fast out ) then you should be OK. if you drive it like a hot FWD hatch, then yes, you could be caught out. then again, my 3ltr Capri did this randomly, but probabaly cos the back shocks were utterly fucked.avoid targas though unless you have a snug garage to keep it in

Go for an older model: how can you not fancy this:

i'm seriously considering one myself tbh :)

these are not cheap now - a proper solid rust free carrera 3.2 with the G50 will cost £20K+. I always fancied the M491 (IIRC) factory Turbo Bodied one- but these are rocking horse poo rarity now and go for anther 10K if you can find one

Yeah, hairdressers car etc but fucktons of fun to drive. My g/f hired one for me for Xmas in Sydney and done the Blue Mountains in it... great fun and the source of the only speeding ticket I have ever got :)

Indeed, but 5 years ago you'd have had one for 8-10k. I buy cars with one eye on fun factor and another on investment potential. (that sounds wanky but i mean 'beyond the point of devaluation, and starting to become rare)

Living in London my main transport are bicycles, any vehicles in my ownership do fewer than 1,500 miles p/a  The only thing stopping me buying more is the garage-lack!

Thanks for all your input. Firstly, though, I really don't want a 911. Secondly, a Boxster would just be for going to the coast, driving though Spain and around EU. There is usually only me and Mrs D so most of the time two seats is enough, and we do have another car should we need more seats. Luggage space is not a major issue for the sort of use we would put it too. Also, it isn't seen as a hairdresser car here in Spain so the image thing is far less of an issue than it might be in the UK. And I like them, I see them as a successor to the 914-4/914-6 which was a car I loved.

I also think that the older ones are very affordable and prices have started to bottom out. I think that it would be a lot of fun and would be unlikely to lose money beyond wear and tear.

I have a whopping soft spot for Boxters - I think it's down to the (rubbish!) Playstation game that was bought out at the same time - I once looked into one years ago though gladly snapped out of it. When I surveyed all my pals they said it's always been a poor mans 911, though for me they were preferable. They're not hairdressers cars like a TT or the Ka roadster are IMO - a bankers bit-on-the-side mebbe?

The main thing that nagged me was (and I would be buying one at the end of it's life - I guess similar to you) the wear and tear - stories of new wheels (or parts) costing more than the rent etc.

The thing that actually killed the plan dead was an acquaintance buying one - I was no way going to copy him!

Why are they called hairdresser's cars?

And what has happened to Urban?

Porsche-owning should warrant an instaban
