Booking a villa type holiday

Thora

Differently Ethical
Could anyone give me some tips on the best way to go about this?

I want to book a villa preferably in France, for say 8 adults and 2 children. Somewhere not too far a drive from the ferry/train, with a pool, and in a village with some amenities. Any suggestions on places where others have stayed, good websites to go through? Not anything super expensive either, maybe £1500 ish for a week and likely in school holidays.

Ownersdirect is pretty good, especially for colonised bits of France like Perigord. Not sure about Normandy.

A pool anywhere near the ferry will be chilly. The Gauls are only sybarites when it comes to food; their rock hard beds and freezing pools are designed to purify the soul.

I was looking for somewhere a few years ago. Never got around to booking anywhere but ownersdirect is probably the best bet for cheapness.

From what I remember, it might be difficult to find somewhere big enough for that price in the school holidays.

I think you might struggle to find something for that sort of money in the school holidays too :( They just whack the prices up because they can. If you're all prepared to bunk up a bit (so some people sleep in the living room/kids share rooms with parents) you might be able to do it. Prices tend to be related to the number of bedrooms.

Have a look on homeaway.co. uk

Owners direct has always come up trumps for me. On two occasions I have gone back to the same place and booked early and got really good discounts at school holiday periods.

I've booked to go this July & it was far cheaper booking as a package with Brittany ferries (they did offer an early booking discount of 25%)
The Ferry crossing alone can cost £400+ depending on the time of year (if your taking any of the longer crossings, ie not dover - calais)

The other thing about going to France is that Tesco vouchers can be redeemed against le Shuttle trips at an exchange rate that values an August crossing for a family of twelve in an MPV at the same as a frozen horsemeat lasagne.
