Does anyone know why the athletes bite the medals in the phototshoots after the award ceremony?

As for the biting thing, I thought it was to do with a faux attempt to check the authenticity of the precious metal? Like in dem olden days, check you e'nt being fobbed off with tin!

I think photographers tell them to do it as it makes for a more interesting shot or something. It's not just medals either.
