Good stuff. Any bets on how long it'll take for McQuaid to release a statement disputing the result and promising litigation?

he claimed he would walk away if he wasn't voted in at this attempt.

i am tempted to post a picture of Jimmy Hill such is my skepticism

Thank fuck for that. Who knows what a forensic accountant is going to turn up. Pat may as well try for a seat at FIFA now and see how much dough he can trouser there.

Am I the only one who worries that, should Cookson win, nothing will change? In the sense that everyone who's been pushing for change at the top will just think "job done".

It's hard to know. Cookson has essentially run a campaign as "Not McQuaid". He may as well have been an empty suit. I'm far from enthused about the aspects of his background and connections that we do know about - in particular the Makarov thing and also, I'm distinctly wary of anyone coming about of the British Cycling / Sky hybrid monster, which, like Orica-GreenEdge, is a conflict of interest on wheels. But for now "Not McQuaid" has to be better than McQuaid in the sense that a sandwich you vaguely suspect may have fecal matter somewhere in it is better than one you know to be a shit sandwich.

Already allegations of Cookson offering bribes. Wtf?

Last ditch tactic by McQuaid. DOn't get me wrong, Cookson may well be bent, but the stuff that came up yesterday was McQuaid claiming that ethics committee was investigating him. Blatant mudslinging.

McQuaid was reduced to tears as he bade farewell to the organisation he had ruled for eight years.

“My wife has got her husband back and my children have got their father back,” he said, before breaking down.

(((McQuaid's wife and children)))

Jonathan Edwards seemed very patronising on the Beeb this afternoon as he was introducing the women's road race, feeling the need to explain breakaways, team tactics and the peloton. Maybe it's because I've been watching cycling for decades now, but the idiosyncracies of a race become apparent as you watch them.

I was pleased the bbc showed last 2 hours of women's race. Who was the aussie commentator?

Strangely I hope it rains tomorrow so I can justify being indoors on sunday afternoon. ..

The beeb coverage has been a bit hit-and-miss, tbh. Edwards seemed a strange choice to front it, none of the commentators during the TTs (including Boardman) seemed to be able to understand how time splits work, this despite some numbers being green and some being red.

Good that they showed the women's race on actual telly today though. Was a good race and a good advert for the sport.

Tiernan-Locke apparently asked by UCI to explain Bio passport irregularities dating to his time at Endura. Article in Times tomorrow.

Anyway, predictions for the big race tomoz? Canc looks pretty unbeatable, but that's boring so I'll go with a late breakaway taking it while Mario, Sagan et al watch each other. Someone like Barguil or Ulissi assuming the distance isn't too much for them. I would suggest Dan Martin but no danger he's getting off the leash given his year so far.

I heard someone suggest they have bib numbers that they keep during the season. During the women's race it was, can't remember who suggested it though.
Today... go with the big favourite. Unstoppable.

I like the way you sort of make a prediction and then sink 5 more names into the frame to cover your arse.;) Say one name, stick with it and look silly, thats what I'm doing.

I think the climbs will be too attritional on Chinny but at least one person I know has said the laps will make the parcours like Td Flanders.

If Sagan had a stronger team I'd say him. I don't like the man but going for Valverde.

I'm still not as bad as Inrng with his three-score-and-five names :). Can't see EDB doing anything, tbh. Can't think of any really, really long races where he has looked like winning. Valverde is another of the main contenders, but I couldn't bring myself to contemplate the eventuality (even if he did good things for fantasy team at the Vuelta).

Looks like the descents are going to be as important as the climbs today.

I'd rather they did something about making riders carry numbers on their rain jackets (which should be in team colours incidentally).

what's happened to GB?

They don't really have many riders who will go well on a course like this. Plus they did their usual thing of sitting on the front for the opening hundred kms then disappearing. Boardman saying Froome dropped by peloton but not seen him.

edit: half my fantasy team have already abandoned :D
