Bicycle Racing Thread 2013

Keeeeennnnnnnnnnyyyy!!!! :D:D:D

Before some stage race or another I told where to to keep an eye on that kid and he promptly repaid my hype by barely showing his face for most of the year. Proper heart in mouth will-he-won't-he end to the stage, too.

Looking at the GC, Pinot lost a minute and a half on the stage with the echelons plus another minute when the peloton split on the final descent of the stage won by Gilbert (I think it was that one anyway). Add some other odds and sods here and there where he lost time through inexperience and he would be looking at a top 5, and that without his big disadvantage due to being a piss weak tester. Genuine prospect imo.

On balance I'm glad Roche held onto his position today despite his being a Saxo boy. Was a bit worried he was going to pop completely given how early he was dropped. But fair fucks to the lad, the change of scene has obviously worked out well for him. Put in some nice rides, and had the balls to try something on more than one occasion.

What's the script with Pozzo? Massive TT (which still has me worried, tbh), but pretty poor by his standards when the road has gone uphill. Never really thought of him as anything more than a top 10 contender GC-wise, but he can be such a stylish rider and a joy to watch. Would have thought the climbs here would have suited him.

Big mention for Net-App Endura for showing the wildcard teams how it's done, too.

Tbh, if it wasn't for the awful winner (not to mention Valverde getting yet another podium) then this would have been a belting GT. Some proper ballsy rides, and not a dud stage that I can think of.

Oh, and Barguil :)

The winners of the last few GTs are a pretty unusual bunch:

Horner (41 years old, highest previous GT finish 8th).
Froome (grupetto fodder until halfway through his career).
Wiggins (grupetto fodder until halfway through his career).
Hesjedal (first time GT winner at 32, only one previous GT top 10).
Cobo (zero cq points the previous year, only one previous GT top 10)

Only Contador and Nibali fit the traditional pattern for GT winner's careers - ie they've both been top GC riders since early on. All of the others are anomalies by comparison with the pre-EPO era. The most consistent guy in GTs over this period who hasn't actually won one, Purito, is another anomaly, suddenly becoming a top GC rider in his 30s.

If you were to publish an article in the cycling press in 2008 predicting that any two of these riders (Horner, Wiggins, Hesjedal, Froome, Cobo, Purito) would win or even podium a GT at any point in their careers, everyone would have thought you were a complete fruitcake. Even picking one would make ou look very optimistic. It appears we are now in an era of cycling where the best predictions of future GT success are made by randomly dropping a biro on a list of names.

When this first started happening (Indurain), it was, in retrospect clearly a result of the arrival of EPO. What's going on now is a lot less clear. Is it a cleaner field allowing people who couldn't compete before to come to the fore? That seems too simplistic given some of the people we are talking about. Is it simply EPO-era business as usual? That doesn't seem to fit the evidence in terms of power outputs etc either. It could be that a generally cleaner peloton is both allowing clean riders to compete and simultaneously giving those riders who are taking risks a bigger relative boost than they had when everyone is on the hot sauce. Whatever it is, we are in the age of the utterly random GT win.

Yep, even taking into account the general absence of other strong time trial riders, that's a huge amount of time to put into everyone in that short a distance.

Another enjoyable days racing. Can't wait for Saturdays race at Epsom Surrey. I'm going...looking forward to it immensely.

He put almost a minute into Dowsett - who would generally be in the bag marked 'strong time trial riders'. 56 seconds over Dowsett in 10 miles is taking the piss really.

Pretty entertaining day again. Good to see that Martin and Quintana are going for it every time there's a climb, even though the parcours really isn't tough enough for them. Its hard to see Wiggins surrendering that stupidly large advantage he got in the TT, but at least they're making him work for it.

Also good to see Cavendish back doing what he does.

Saw somewhere that Dowsett was taking it very easy so as not to end up crocked before the Worlds. Whether that's true or just covering is anyone's guess. But if he wasn't riding a non-trier then that's a ridiculous strong time from Wiggins.

Well, Martin and Quintana put on a show... and Sky drowned the entertainment as so often.

Great winner though. Bennett has been considered the most promising Irish U23 for while.

I've got lucky in a draw and will be in Madison-Genesis team car tomorrow, Sidmouth to HayTor ! Never been that close to the professionals. Anything I ought to know or do ?

Don't drive into the riders. Just cos they do it at the Tour...

Never been in a team car, but I've heard that they drive like absolute lunatics when they are trying to move between groups. So maybe take a big dump before you get in just to make sure nothing squeaks out.

Also, enjoy yourself. I'd love a day doing that.

Question. Do sky sit at the front of the pelaton as a race tactic or as an advertising technique? They always seem to be there but it doesn't seem to help them win everytime.

I heard team car drivers are all ex pro riders these days, so they will also be worth getting some tips and info by talking to them.
Nice prize ChrisD.

It's a tactical thing. Their whole approach is about keeping races orderly and controlled, keeping strong domestiques who can put out huge sustained power on the front, riding a hard, steady pace, and making attacks difficult. This works for them in stage races much more often than it works in one day races, where they tend to get ripped apart. But they try it pretty much any time they have a contender for the win, almost regardless of the type of race they are in. It's at its most extreme when they are riding for Wiggins because he is at his best when time trialling along at steady pace and can't deal with sudden accelerations and decelerations of the kind pure climbers excell at.

Today, they weren't looking for a stage win. They were just riding to make sure that Martin and Quintana didn't get too far up the road.

(This is also why Sky tend to be unpopular amongst fans outside of Britain, basically because wild, uncontrolled, racing is more entertaining.)

En route to Sidmouth for start. My bus has just been overtaken by the broom wagon! I'm with madison-generis yeam car. Feel like a kid about to enter a sweet shop. Just hope my bladder holds out and don't get car sick.

Cheers Nigel, good to know.

As for getting a ride in one of the cars, amazing stuff. When the tour went through ambleside there was a car about two minutes behind the main convoy. He was driving like an absolute nutter to get back with the group. Lights and horns blazing trying to avoid the crowd who thought the whole thing had finished :)

Where you planning on watching it from? I was planning heading to around Leith Hill as its one of my regular rides and i'm intrigued to see their pace up it in close up!

Not sure yet....but I'd love to be next to ChrisD that's for sure. I entered that raffle as well!

Just to prove I was there...... what an amazing day. The folks I met involved with the professional circuit were all really nice guys. Don't see much of the action sitting back in the convoy but catches the spirit of the event and has made me realise that competing at this level is really really tough.
