Bicycle Racing Thread 2013

Yeah, it's nice to see Mollema actually win. On the Roche / Saxo thing I tend to agree. I like Roche but anything connected to Riis leaves me cold. That said, Saxo does have a few other rider I like (Majka, Morkov) and they have livened up the last few stages.

Looks like a record time too, faster than Purito in 2010 and faster than Cobo and Froome in 2011.

I look forward to Horner v. Froome at the Tour next year...

He beat Froome and Cobo by 32 seconds apparently. Although I suspect that wind conditions were more favourable as a whole bunch of riders beat Froome and Cobo by a smaller amount.

Bit off topic but has anyone ever cycled the Hardknott Pass or 'The Struggle'?

Missus and I are off the the lake district so I fancy giving them a go.

Amazing Vuelta, really enjoying it - more than the Tour in fact. Not sure what to make of Horner. :hmm: Even managed a bit of argy bargy up the final climb between Valverde and Nibali, looks like it cost Valverde as he fell back quite a way following it but still made a few seconds up on Nibali.

Not to mention a pretty large group remaining at the foot of the climb, with Katusha starting the attacks pretty much as soon as the road went uphill.

Apparently Horner beat Contador's Verbier VAM record on Pena Carbaga. Pen Carbaga is steeper and a slightly shorter effort, both of which are advantages, but it's still pretty astonishing. The article below also points out that his VAM was a lot higher than Froome's on Ventoux, but that's a significnt sounding statistic that is in fact completely meaningless, given that Ventoux involves climbing for between three and four times as long a time and so is in no way comparable.

NIbali doesn't sound over pleased about the way things are going: Nibali told Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper, “I can’t climb at 500 watts. I was going at 430 watts and that guy accelerated. What could I do?”

Also Purito stage is Puritos.

Horner edges into red.
Roche is set up by his team but doesn't have it at the end.
Pozzovivo loses a bit of time.
Pinot goes missing again and drops below Konig.

Should be a great stage. The mountains are where the excitement is and there's a couple of beauties tomorrow. Still plenty to play for and even if Rodriguez is a little far back to win, he's still close enough to make those in front react should he decide to attack. So many possibilities, should be a great day's racing.

The climb that prompted this quote,

The manager of the Kelme team, Vicente Belda, said: What do they want? Blood? They ask us to stay clean and avoid doping and then they make the riders tackle this kind of barbarity.

Didn't even get home in time for the highlights today. Probably just as well given it was a bit of a disaster both for Pinot and my fantasy team.

Cadel Evans got only his first win of the season yesterday at the Tour of Alberta. Wouldn't be surprised if he calls it a day at the end of the year.

Nah - he just completed the Grand Prix de Quebec, and is now off to the Grand Prix de Montreal. In his opinion, an excellent warm up to the Worlds.

Hubby is sooo rooting for the old guy Horner.

I must admit I'm rooting for him, as well.

Three seconds.... imo Karma for loosing the seconds during a different stage.

Meanwhile back in the uk.....here's the itv schedules for Tour of Britain. Looking forward to it virtually passing my door later in the week. .

It starts September `6th, iirc.

I watch all the tours religiously.

It would be cool to watch the Tour of Britain and say -> " ooh that is where such-and-such is" - It would make me feel closer to you guys.

Could someone start a thread about "when the tour passes my place"?

If they had removed the Angrilu would Kelme have stopped doping? Woof woof!

Vincenzo Nibali I salute you. He's the most entertaining GC rider in the sport.

An absolutely epic stage, marred only by the embarassment of a 41 year old former Armstrong sidekick winning.

Another amazing day for the French kids, with Elissonde joining Geniez and Barguil as a stage winner and doing it on one of the great climbs. Pinot also climbed very well, and got back up to 7th on GC.

Roche cracked relatively early but limited his losses to end up with a top 5. Before the Vuelta he said that was his target, and to be honest I thought it was beyond him. A great race for him.

Second fastest time up Angliru ever, beaten only by a (rocket fueled) Heras in 2000. Faster than Contador 08 and faster than Cobo and Froome 11 by almost a minute.

Just finished watching it on delay - wow, amazing stage, proper mano-a-mano. I know now what you mean/have said before Nigel about cycling/boxing and loving both. Have loved all 3 grand tours this year and as a noob to the sport it's fantastic.

Money Mayweather tonight too
