Bicycle Racing Thread 2013

And Heyjedal I think

Any news on what is wrong with him?

Was inevitable that Wiggins was going to go too. Now we have to wait for the soap opera that is Wiggins and Froome at the Tour. Or will they send Froome to la Vuelta?

Ryder isn't quite sure. Refreshing comments on Eurosport saying he'd devoted everything to the Giro this year and that it might have been a virus or he simply pushed too hard in the TTs whilst below par physically. They're doing tests etc.
Meanwhile at Team Sky, Sir Brailsford says Sir SPOTY is the most ill man in the world or something...

If they hadn't made Uran wait for him on the first crash, he would have been around a minute behind Nibali.

I still don't get all this hostility to Wiggins. "Sir SPOTY" :D

Hardly his fault, is it?

He's a bit of a knob. Up on stage playing the rock star accepting knighthoods whilst simultaneously doing the "just an average Joe" I hate publicity and celebrity shite.

The clincher for me was him - on 1m a year or more - slagging off striking fire fighters on twitter cos they get paid more than army fire fighters or some bogus argument or othrr. In summary, he's a wank.

And look what happened after his last major DNF.

I really can't hate the guy.Just what do you expect him to do (ok, apart from be more like Cav :D)?

Yep, the Tour is gonna be all about who is the Sky leader now. Not that it already wasn't in this country's papers, anyway.

Is it normal to have a team arguing over leadership? I've only been watching cycling a few years but there was the Armstrong Contador thing at the 2009 tour. Have there been more in recent years?

It's common for there to be some jockeying for leadership within a team over the course of a season, and within a race it's common enough for a team to start out with a policy of letting the road decide who the leader will end up being (this often happens on teams which have multiple top 10 candidates but no obvious podium candidate who can simply demand total support). It's rare that the squabbling is between two teammates who think they can actually win the Tour and rarer still for it to be conducted in public.

Peraud should really have been at the Giro in place of Betancur imo, and the Colombian should have been going to the Tour. I know a French will always want to ride his home tour and all, but.

I dunno. Betancur is clearly a more talented rider, but Peraud will get additional attention at home just for being French and he's probably a better bet for a Tour top 10 this year. Also, I'm not sure how Peraud would handle the steeper and more irregular Italian climbs.

Next year, I think Betancur will get to ride any race he wants.

As I said, no bunch sprint today...

:D. If I were Marc Madiot I would be slightly annoyed with Bouhanni. Then again, he's only 21 or summat, and it's not like we really have a clue about how he is feeling etc.

Edit: especially as Jeanneson as shown himself to be a rubbish French Gesink.

Not if his team mates keep getting pinged for dope ;)

I was actually thinking the Giro parcours would be better for Peraud and vice versa, but that could just be me. As you say, it's not certain he would cope with the climbs, plus the French guy is always gonna ride the French races. Was just musing really. And Betancur is fast becoming one if my fave riders, even if he does sometimes seem a bit of a tool in interviews.

Or criticising Olympic gold medallists for "cashing in". Ignoring the fact that he earns millions of quid a year in salary, sponsorship plus all his lottery funding over the years, while a British gymnast is gonna be lucky to get noticed once every four years.

I actually don't hold any malice for the guy, despite not being a fan. He's just a dull rider who comes across as a bit of a tube. Plus I am genuinely disappointed he has had to abandon - you always want to see the riders you don't support getting beaten fair and square by those that you are a fan of dislike less. It's what makes watching them win worth while iyswim.

Just been looking at the TdF route. M
It may simplify things for Sky, because there are three medium hill stages with potential problem descents, and two major mountain days before the thirty km TT. Unless Wiggins arrives with great legs and clears his head from his descending problem, then he will be well down by the TT regardless of team tactics.

The Giro is shit. All the best stages are reduced in length/height, the weather's so bad you can't see, and without me paying for some sort of subscription I have to watch a dodgy stream of it.

Bring on the Tour! :D
