Best ways to book multi stage trips

I'm in the position of going to the US soon for a specific purpose, but wanting to go to other places around that date so as to make the most of the holiday. I'm pretty flexible about where and when to fly and stay, but most of the sites I've looked at seem to specialise in simple return flights to and from the same place - even the ones that have the option of multiple stages within a trip seem to be very limited as to what they offer. I'm thinking of nothing very complicated, just fly to city X, then from city Y to Z, then Z back to London, that sort of thing.

What's the best method of doing this in people's opinion? I really don't travel a lot these days so I'm utterly out of practice.

Well, the thing is, I'm not sure right now - I have a specific place that I need to be on specific dates but apart from that I'm quite easy. I just want to explore the possibilities of where I might be able to go without utterly killing my credit card. It seems to be quite hard to explore these things online.

Vegas from dates X to Y (over about 5 days near the end of September).

You can go pretty much anywhere you like then.

BA & Virgin fly direct to Vegas, they also fly direct back from LA and San Francisco, BA back from San Diego, Dallas, Houston, Denver, Seattle whatever floats yer boat.

If you fly indirect to Vegas that opens up Delta, American, US Airways & United too, via their hubs (Atlanta-Detroit-Minneapolis / Chicago-Dallas-Miami / Charlotte-Philadelphia / Chicago-New York-Washington DC-Houston) at which you can stop if you wish and fly back from wherever you wish via a hub.

As Vegas is essentially West Coast it won't cost significantly more to come back from anywhere. Depending on the route you can often add in the domestic flights for not much money, or look to Southwest Airlines for a cheapo flight.
