Best Non-Dairy Milk?

Found out today that Lidl's own brand long life unsweetened oat milk is 85p a litre. (I've had it before, but a recent price check is a good thing with the way food prices are going atm!)
That's a full 30p cheaper than the equivalent Morrison's own brand one.
Stocked up.

Aye, I don't eat a lot of porridge but it seems like a waste of oat milk making it with oat milk when the thing is oats in the first place.
I'd be inclined to make it with water.

I don't eat any porridge, if that means the cooked stuff. But raw oats and milk, or metaphorical milk, is quite nice. It's always puzzled to me why people want to turn something so enjoyable into wallpaper paste, and probably explains why I don't understand the world.

Personally I don't like it (and I am generally a lidl fan).
Pissed off to see that they are going with the Blackstone Oatly for their corporate shelf equivalent. Previously they had Minor Figures which they sold for a very reasonable 1.40 and which also tastes a lot better.

I do however like the Co-op's Gro oat milk it's gone up 5p recently, but is still only 90p and tastes great.
Minor Figures is currently on offer at Waitrose for £1.30 but I keep getting Waitrose cardholder discounts of 50p making it only 70p

Good to know about the Co-op one, thanks - we have one of those a lot nearer than Lidl so will try their one next time I need some. I generally don't shop in our local Co-op because I had a bad run of veg that was mouldy when I got it out of the packaging - that was years ago mind you, but put me off a bit.

I only go in for oat milk these days . . . . oh, and every now and then they do some deal for a fiver where you can get a tenners worth of frozen fish, fish fingers AND potato wedges, ice cream, onion rings, peas etc. I'm only really in it for the fish but it's about £20s worth of stuff.

Oh. . . and also be aware that not all co-ops carry the Gro Oat milk. The one five minutes from my house doesn't for instance. Annoying.

I've just discovered I really like oat milk🤦‍♀

I've only bought Aldi own brand so I will trawl back through this thread to get other recommendations

I can't stand the taste of soya except in soy sauce, rice milk is watery and tastes strongly (to me) of rice, nut milks taste nutty.
Oat milk is surprisingly like whole milk in creaminess and doesn't have a strong "other" taste as such (tiny bit oaty but not a really bold flavour), and it behaves just like dairy in sauces and baking, at least in the recipes I have tried it so far. Next on the agenda to attempt is Yorkshire pud :D

I really like oat milk.

Rice has a taste? I've never been able to eat it without a strong-tasting main flavour like curry or chilli. I've always regarded risotto as a bad joke.

Oh. I’ve found rice milk to be the only bearable substitute in tea.

It was the one I liked least, maybe being able to strongly taste rice is a genetic thing like brussels sprouts tasting bitter or coriander tasting soapy :D

Ooh dunno. It has been the only plant milk I could bear to drink a whole cup of tea with

I've got some of this potato milk called Dug. Looking at the ingredients it's actually potato and pea. But surprisingly nice, if I can keep sourcing it I might carry on. I tend to stick to alpro soya, can't drink oat milk due to gluten contamination, virtually impossible to find good gluten free oat milk.

Interesting...especially the peas.
I got some vegan magnum ice cream. And checked the ingredients...pea protein was there..it must be a good substitute for dairy.

Right, I got a carton of that today, to test it out. I haven't got into yet, having milk only on my cereal each morning, but I'll try and remember to report how it compares to Oatly and the rest.

89p in my local.

To be fair it's about as good as the rest bar minor figures and the higher end oatly 'barista' version. I don't like it but I do like co-ops 95p Gro oat milk.

Where's that in the shop? The stuff I get isn't chilled, but on the shelf next to teas, coffees, sugars, etc.

Do you mean co-ops Gro?
Confusingly my co-op has three oat milk sections. There is the alt milk isle (not chilled) that has oatly etc, then there is another section for nondairy vegans which stocks minor figures (at a whopping £2) but Gro is in the fridge with the actual milks, even though it doesn't have to be chilled (it's just like any other oat milk). . . . also worth noting that some co-ops (mostly the small ones) don't carry it at all.

Is there any own-brand oat milk that tastes as deliciously creamy as Oatly Semi?
I don't know what oatly semi is. Oatly's barista is 'almost' as creamy as Minor Figures regular.
Co-ops own brand 'Gro' is about the same as Oatly barista, but maybe slightly closer to Oatly regular. . . it doesn't quite look the part in terms of whiteness, but it's only one of three that get the Suplex taste approval stamp. . . and it's only 90p

OK, I'll have a look* tomorrow. I normally bypass the fridge, because the oat milk in there is a pound or so more expensive than the shelved stuff.

*I was going to say "have a butcher's", but then reconsidered.

Yeah this, I only use "milk" occasionally anyway, usually for white sauces or baking - I'm not going to spend more than I have to, basically!
I'd only have it in tea to get through a carton to finish it off once opened and wouldn't be inclined to drink any type as-is, I don't eat cereal or other things that you'd typically use it in either.

Handy to have a carton or two of long-life in the cupboard in case I fancy making a recipe that requires it though.

I kind of wish I could buy it in smaller quantities at a reasonable price, sometimes 500ml would be more in line with what I need (I suspect it freezes fine but the chance of me having room in the freezer is slim, since the shortages and empty shelves in early 2020 I've gone a bit "prepper" as far as the contents of my freezer are concerned :D )
