Best Non-Dairy Milk?

Due to N always turning down ice cream due to lactose intolerance issues, I managed to get some vanilla Swedish Glace soy vegan "Ice Cream" - we've now both tried it and agree it's bloody delicious.
Probably the best non-dairy dairy replacement product we've tried so far, I don't normally like soya (unless it's a savoury fermented sauce/condiment!) but it has enough vanilla in it that it just tastes creamy and no soya taste. 10/10.



I know this post is old, but we tried the Minor Figures oat milk recently when it was on special for £1 a litre in Morrisons - it was fine cold, but when I used it in a roux based sauce, I found it split a bit, normally oat milk behaves perfectly in these situations, so we probably won't get that particular one again unless we have no need to cook with it. On its own, it was fine.
Yes old. I actually switched to mostly lidls barista oat milk, but tend to buy Oatly in bulk from amazon when the offers come up. That way I can have four boxes of six delivered, free delivery and an extra 5% off the reduced price (£1.40 usually I think). . . . but also. I mostly use water for a roux.
 
I'm finding for cooking purposes, the Alpro creamy works well.
I also like it in coffee, but it's too much in tea - I've taken to having my tea black with honey instead.
I feel like if you're going to put oat milk in tea, you want one of the more watery own brand ones instead.

We're not completely off all dairy products, he's alright with hard cheeses as long as he doesn't overdo it, and yoghurt (so it's a lactose issue rather than lactase, or a milk allergy) and oat milk in general has been a bit of a game-changer in terms of him being able to enjoy a bowl of muesli or a white roux type sauce with something. That and soy Ice Cream :) Now just have to suss out whether there are any tinned custards that are any good and don't break the bank, some of the chiller cabinet non-dairy options are mortal expensive compared to a regular tinned custard.
 
I complained to oatly because their barrista organic curdles in coffee and tastes rank. I had quite a bit of correspondence with them which was quite amusing and they sent me 6 litres of barrista (unorganic).

I tried minor figures but imo it does not taste as good as Oatly barrista.

Alpro soya dessert (which is basically custard) has always been fine. Shelf not chiller. The whippable custard is rank though.

Vegan magnums and Ben and Jerry's taste pretty good.

I think my difficulty with custard is that it's nigh on impossible to find a custard that is made with eggs but not dairy - the companies that make them go vegan rather than for a more limited lactose-intolerant but fine with eggs customer demographic, which is completely understandable!

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll try the Alpro dessert stuff.

I have the opposite problem as an egg intolerant person.
 
I really like Aldi’s oat milk with porridge or cereal. I’m not sure how it is in tea or coffee though, as I take mine black.

Yes but both organic and non organic barrista are in identical cartons- aside from one says organic. Do not use in coffee. Other then that the organic is fine.

Minor figures organic barrista does not curdle/separate in coffee but imo does not taste as good.
 
We got some Alpro Barrista Oat Milk this most recent grocery delivery - as usual I look for the special offers and this was reduced to £1.50 in Morrisons and I had a More Card £1.50 off dairy or dairy alternatives voucher, so I basically got 1l for free (although I bought 2, wasn't going to argue with effectively 75p a litre).

Now bear in mind I do not use oat milk in hot drinks - N gets good coffee at work, I don't drink coffee any more due to acid reflux :( and I find oat milk a bit much in tea so unless I have cow juice in for other reasons, I have my tea black with a bit of honey - so I have no idea how it behaves when added cold to a hot beverage.

This particular one has come out top of the list so far in terms of making a roux based sauce however - made a cheese sauce with it last night (N has issues with milk/cream/ice cream but not so much with dairy hard cheese like cheddar so replacing the milk component with a non-dairy alternative is sufficient for us) and it was delicious, behaved really well somewhere between milk and cream, no separation, thickened up well - best yet for a roux. I reckon it would work really well in a rice pudding too.

N says it's good on muesli, which is his main use for it.

Hope they keep this one on special offer for a while, it's long life so I might stock up on my next shop if it's still on offer.

EDIT: Actually had this a couple of hours ago and have developed a sore mouth since, decided to check the ingredients and do a bit of googling, it contains chicory root which can cause oral irritation in people with an allergy to birch pollen (which is a big hayfever trigger for me) due to similarity in protein structure - bollocks! Not life-threatening, but uncomfortable, I get sore mouth/throat from a few food sources due to minor intolerances (often linked to similarity with hayfever allergens).
Back to the Alpro Creamy Oat Drink which doesn't contain chicory root for me!

Rude Health organic plant based milks (oat, almond and coconut) are currently 3 for £4.50 from Morrisons which is a pretty good deal.

I got the oat ones, I'll report back when we've tried it.

Gro oat milk is always £1.50 at the Coop, but they only sell it at one of the four Coops within the vicinity of my place.

Yeah I don't really have co-op as an option.
There's one a bus ride away but have had a few bad purchases from there and not going back there.
I'd rather get stuff from pretty much any other supermarket at this point.
I'd not go there just for 1 thing even if it's cheaper if that makes sense! (Would still need to pay bus fare).

I've been using Oatly Barista for the last few years, but have just discovered that it has a stabiliser called Dipotassium phosphate in which is quite harrmful. Going to switch to the organic one which is additive free.
