Béal na Bláth 2024 commemoration was today.
For those who don't know what this is about..
On 22 August 1922, during the Irish Civil War Michael Collins, was killed in an ambush near Béal na Bláth by anti treaty forces while travelling in convoy from Bandon. The ambush was planned in a farmhouse in the village close to The Diamond Bar Commemorations are held on the nearest Sunday to the anniversary of his death. A memorial cross stands 1 km south of the village, at the site of the shooting in the townland of Glannarogue (Gleann na Ruaige), on a local road which was a dirt road when Collins was shot. A small white pillar marked with a cross, located just to the right of the steps, marks the exact spot where he fell.
Collins was director of Intelligence of the Irish Republcan Army during the war of Independence
He was Chairman of the provisional government of the Irish Free State from January 1922 and commander in chief of the National Army from July until his death in an ambush in August 1922, during the Civil War.
The Country was divided. Many felt Collins betrayed those fighting for freedom by signing the treaty. Collins was sent to Londond by De Valera. He knew he was signing his death sentence. Many believe De Valera was cute sending Collins. That he knew it would destroy Collins politically...and would remove him as a rival for power..
Collins is still a massively popular figure in Ireland.
