Apple says iPhones will support RCS in 2024

Not so great news for Apple and their shitty walled garden of profiteering. They only make moves that benefit general consumers when they've absolutely been forced to (see: USB-C).

Yes. Hasn't this been an Android thing for a while now?

I just want the bastards to put WhatsApp on the iPad mini, so I can catch up on the last ten years of messages people might have been sending me.
I know. You still need to link to to a SIM/phone number, though. Otherwise you could have just used web.whatsapp.com innit

Yeah, I get that, but my iPad mini is quite happy to make and receive phone calls and texts on behalf of a crappy SE 2020 which languishes in a drawer, so there isn’t really any connectivity excuse.

What is RCS?
SMS+ basically.

It makes traditional texting act like a chat/messenger so, WhatsApp etc and uses data/WiFi to send the messages.
The messages are also encrypted unlike in SMS.

Main issue is whether your network wants to charge you for those messages if sent over mobile data, like with old style MMS messages. I think most in the UK aren't, but don't quote me on that.

This said, I still make some messages default to SMS because I know that isn't data reliant and the recipient is more likely to receive it if they haven't responded to or read a WhatsApp or Signal I've sent some time ago.

Until they turn SMS off completely of course.

Is this linked to the 2G going off for anyone know or are they on a completely separate part of the bandwidth of that spectrum?

It’s not a bandwidth thing, it’s about the 3GPP protocols. All the generations support SMS, because it does lots of useful machine to machine work outside of person to person messaging. It’s safe for the foreseeable future.

So 2g, 5g doesn't matter as not linked to planned 2g switch off, because the protocol exists outside of the type of carrier signal?

Apple are going to let users send text messages in a different format.

LOL. Apple.
Do people know/care? I mean standard people, not techie people.

I use an iPhone but everyone is on WhatsApp or some other similar messaging app.

Nobody uses texts except my immediate family (partner and two daughters), and like the bank or the doctors’. And I know it’s technically Apple’s special blue bubble and not an “actual” text, but I don’t give a fuck. It’s still words arriving on my phone. In a grey bubble (the bubble’s only blue when I send and that’s not something I’m invested in at all).

No and No, unless it costs them money I suppose.

I had some message from Vodafone aaages ago about which messaging app to use/not.

Most people use summat else though as you say. Too many apps competing for the same space.

What will happen to those using dumb or feature phones??

I ninja edited a bit but basically all the protocols (at least up to 5G) have been designed to support SMS.
Most carriers don't even have voice on 5G, so that would be a pleasant surprise at least. It's the main reason I have 5G disabled on my phone for the time being. Even with a strong 5G signal, your 4G antenna needs to be on to get voice. And since I can't tell the difference in terms of data speed, 5G just eats battery for no reason. I realise they're eventually moving voice to 5G, but they're in no hurry about it.

Probably not and probably not. They might notice their texts are slightly different but who sends texts these days? My window cleaner and my bank, that's who. And I'm on Android anyway.

It will update imessage but like you say the vast majority of people are already using whatsapp anyway.
