Apple, Motorola and Lenovo worst polluters

There's an interesting guide to green electronics on Greenpeace's website which ranks computer makers based on their use of toxic chemicals and electronic waste (e-waste) policies.

Dell and Nokia came out as the environmental good guys, while Apple, Acer, Motorola and Lenovo came in bottom.

The article ends: "With a average score of only 4/10 it is clear that the electronics industry has a long way to go before it can make any claims to being a green industry."

Ain't that the truth....

Apple has been named a “Forward Green Leader,” one of the top ten environmentally progressive companies recognized by the Sierra Club and its investment advisor, Forward Management.

They also operate a recycling program where they will recycle any computer and monitor (from any manufacturer) if you buy one of their systems either through the online Apple Store or through a regular Apple Store.

The Silicon Valley Toxic Computers 2005 scorecard shows Sony only marginally better than Apple, and HP way, way head of both of those.

So it all depends on who and how you measure it. All IT companies and most manufacturers generally have a long way to go in the recycling, power-efficiency and reduction of toxic waste stakes.
