Anyone successfully removed those greasy spots left by blu tac?

pootle

little moran
My room is covered by them, and I'm slightly concerned my landlord might keep back some of my deposit to cover it.

I've googled to find suggestions like using lighter fluid ( how?) and sugar soap, but I was wondering if anyone round here had any top tips that actually worked?

I've always used an old hard piece of blue tac and rubbed them off with that.

Yeah, that's useful for removing stubborn little bits of blu tack, but once I've got it totally removed, there's a greasy splodge left behind :( I tried rubbing that splodge with a bit of blu tac, but it just made it worse!

If you're going to piss about that much, why not just paint the wall with some cheap white emulsion? :)

Cos it's not my wall to paint! We're being turfed out cos our landlord is selling the place so no doubt the whole place will get redecorated anyway.

It'd just be nice to leave the room as I found it, or near as dammit. I can't really afford to lose any of my deposit.

All I mean is if you're going to mess about buying lighter fluid or petrol ( ) or sugar soap and then spend ages dabbing at the blu tack splodes - and quite possibly making it worse - you really would be better off spending £2.99 on some cheap paint and a roller :)

Or just leave it!

Again, not really an option.

I'm going to have a go in a discrete spot with some sugar soap, as the prepares walls for paint an' that, doesn't it, so should remove grease and dirt.

S'only a couple of quid, I'd say so sugar soap?

alas i tried B&Q own brand sugar soap on the very same thing...... no luck....... so now the walls have lots of brighter white spots :(

I have tried everything to remove them as well, my son's wall is covered in these horrible greasy marks. I have even tried painting over them but the bit where the Blu Tac was just shows up lighter through the paint.

SS - Don't worry. A few years from now he'll be a goth and you can paint his walls black.

I bought a JML product last night

It's a magic cleaner that promises to remove all stains, including crayon from painted surfaces, which I'm slightly cynical about.

I was going to have a go of it last night but I decided to eat chips and shout at the Brits instead. I'll report back on monday ;)

I'm never using blu-tack on paint again though!!

On a similar subject; never write amusing slogans with Silly String on your walls either. Leaves embarrassingly obvious greasy stains as well - as we found out in the aftermath of a party...

 ;)

I'm wondering when I got all grown up, and wanting to leave things as I found them. Odd.

Anyway, Fingers, how did you apply the lighter fluid? Put some on a clean rag, and dab at the stain?

Just paint over them with Tippex.

And if you have little holes in your wall where you've banged in nails or somesuch - toothpaste is your friend ;)

I used cotton wool and dabbed it and it came off nicely, I think tipex thinner would probably work as well, i am also lead to believe nail varnish remover does the job. :)

you need to get some local glue sniffers around.

nail polish remover should work although it may mess up your paintwork simply becuase you are putting something onto it which isnt fresh air

A can of cheap magnolia would probably be easiest, it will take you a couple of hours but your landlord cant say its been left in a shitey condiion, especially if you take photographs to prove before and after

SO I had a go with the lighter fluid approach, and it deffo made some of the marks much lighter, and less noticeable, not invisible, but much better.

HOWEVER, I now understand why people were saying "Be careful" with the lighter fluid/petrol approach.

Makes you feel funny, doesn't it! Blimus.

Am going to have a go with the JML thingy maybe tonight or tomorrow. Wonder if that'll make my head feel funny?
