Anyone ever washed feather pillows with any success?

I'm thinking you might need a tumble dryer which I don't have.

Drying them's gonna be a nightmare isn't it.

You can wash them at 60 degree. Just shake it up regularly and try to put on a dryer near a heater.

If you wash them in a washing machine put them in with a full load and make sure they are placed right agains the drum with a duvet or suchlike in the centre. Friend washed two pillows on their own and the weight of them in the spin cycle bent the spindle of her machine.

I've just washed two big feather bolsters with good success. The important thing is to keep fluffing them up as they dry.

I've just looked at weather reports and, against my better judgment, have put one man made filling pillow in the washing machine to dry on the line over the next couple of days. Quite how I acquired as many pillows as I am finding in my tidy up I do not know. I intend to wash my feather pillows when the weather is unfathomably hot so they dry in hours on the line.

I think I tried it once and the wet feathers really ponged - I mean couldn't stand the smell, so threw them away and haven't tried again. Good luck and a nose peg to you!

I have a vague memory of that happening. :hmm:

Yes I washed a couple recently, with no problems. I had them on an airer in the kitchen for a couple of days and they dried fine.

It is best if you can use a tumble dryer and frequently taking them out to fluff them up and bung 'em back in till they're bone dry. If I didn't have access to a tumble dryer I'd pick July or August with a long stretch of fine weather forecast and go out every hour and fluff them up well, bring them in at night and take them out again in the morning. Repeat until bone dry.

Was thinking it's probably a summer job. Just in spring cleaning mode. :)

The main problem is if they don't dry quickly enough it's hard (but not impossible) to remove the smell of damp.

I'd go for it when it's a sunny day. :)

Someone was chuckin out pillows in the street here so i nabbed one n prayed for no fleas. As of yet, no fleas, but I still need to wash it, it's grubby. Ikea though and seemed like it was originally quite decent so I couldn't resist.. got no tumble drier, but not in the UK and it's sunny etc, should be all right. Is it def necessary to wash pillows at a high temp like 60 degrees or would 40 be ok? Also... washing detergent and fabric conditioner? Hand wash solution stuff? Just water?

I might just cut them open and put some feathers outside for the birds to make their nests comfty.

Then go pillow shopping :D

I'd use ordinary washing powder or liquid in the washing machine, but no fabric conditioner. 40° is fine.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! What if someone died on them???

Back to lizzieloo: if you are going to dry it in the tumble dryer add two/three tennis balls. Have never done that myself but saw it being advised on TV once.

I've seen that advised but have always worried it might knacker the drum so I just do the frequent fluffing up. Pillows don't cost an awful lot, tumble dryers do.

Tumble dryers are evil
I know. Mine is over 21 years old and runs on gasoline. I bought it when my son was born but have hardly used it in years. I don't think I would replace if it broke.
