Antimalware Service Executable? How to get it gone?

What is this program? I can't shut it down or get rid of it. It uses RAM and I'd rather it didn't.

I've tried a few remedies from the interwebs, but nothing works. Is it essential?

It’s part of windows defender. Not sure why you’d want to stop it working.
