Is it fair enough to ask your boss for a payrise once a year, at least in line with inflation (which i think is 4%ish)?

I've been working in my latest job for just over a year and nobody here seems to have mentioned it.. not sure whether im expected to ask or just be glad to have a job...

Anyone else get one?

I used to work for universities, and you got an inflationary pay rise in August and an incremental pay rise October, which was nice. The one time I worked for a charity they basically said that pay rises were discretionary and awarded at the behest of the management only. I'm sure many companies fall into the later "you might get one some time in the future if we say so" category.

All our rises with inflation and increments have been suspended for 4 years due to the cuts.
Not that we have been getting the increments anyway

It is not unreasonable to ask for it but you very well may not get it.

are you in a union?

Nope, no union, I'm agency... most of us are here... which is what is making me a bit wary. I guess I'll ask the agency who'll ask my boss.

If you are agency staff, your employment contract is with the agency and they are the ones who should be sorting our your payrise, so yes, talk to them. Or check your letter of appointment or whatever other form of contract they gave you.
