One thing to reflect on, that has been insinuated by the defence to the contrary, is the complate lack of motive for the police to fit up a white middle class italian male with police and political connections thru his family, and a so called pretty white middle class american erasmus student for a murder that had already led to the arrest of an estranged black man.
A lazy police force would have left it at that. One in the bag, paperwork over and forget it. Why stir up something bigger and more dangerous for their credibility.
The fact is, they had loads of reasons to be suspicious and followed it up in the line of duty.
PS, the earlier comparisons of this case with the fitting up of the Birmingham 6 are wrong as the british political establishment was quite up for blatantly framing irishman in the 70's and anti irish sentiment was rife and even nurtured, forming part of a larger political backdrop to the troubles and colonial aspirations of britain's ruling elite. Therefre they didn't give a fuck. They benefited from it. Not the case here.
