I checked with my dad, he said let a tennis ball float on the surface so it creates a hole in the ice, and he also makes holes near where the frogs get in and out of the pond.

My parents used to do the same. If it was really cold they had a floating electric pond heater the could use but that was only possible as they had a power supply to the pond.

For balance, here's another small toad. Lots of small toads around here this year, to the extent that I had to check my grass (& put a couple in a safe place) before mowing the other day. (Strangely, not seen any big toads!)

A balmy 9C February night, so thought I'd take a torch out to the pond on the off chance & I spotted a couple of frogs.

It's almost frogging season. In about a week or so you may notice more frogs congregating in your pond. Then by the end of march there could be frogspawn.

Seem to have a female (photo) and a male frog in my pond, but they don't seem interested in each other.
