300

Fans of Frank Miller's graphic novels will definitely want to see this movie - it is stunning.

Almost entirely CGI, 300 is the new Zack Snyder project, he of Sin City and the new Dawn of the Dead film, so you know what you're in for, high cinematic art.

Featuring a mostly British cast, including the exquisite and long overlooked Lena Headey, it's the tale of the fabled Battle of Thermopylae (sp?) ... A bloody onslaught by the Persian army of Xerxes against 300 Spartans.

The DVD will hardly do this film justice, the incredible CGI rendering is tailored for cinema screens alone.

Seriously - go and see this film when it goes on general release, you'll not regret it.
For the "swords and sandals" genre it blows Gladiator and certainly Troy out of the water.

i'd hope so

i mean troy was so bad it sent not just homer* but the entire hellenistic world spinning it it's grave...

*or whatever group of lore poets and editors that came to be known as homer

Looks excellent, but don't expect historical accuracy, which is a shame because the story about Thermopylae is incredible enough on it's own.

I don't know much about the historical accuracy compared to other accounts, I know many tales neglect to mention the Greek troops who backed up the Spartans - this has them (in token measure at least).

I've seen this film twice now at the cinema - and cannot recommend it highly enough.

If nothing else, you have to see how well Lena Headey is looking these days.

This film is not historically accurate; if you are expecing that you might be disappointed. It's based on the graphic novel. The trailer is pretty fun, although i detested sin city (didn't work as a film - violence for its own sake with no story). I hope this is better.

"But keeping in mind Slate's Mickey Kaus' Hitler Rule - never compare anything to Hitler - it isn't a stretch to imagine Adolf's boys at a "300" screening, heil-fiving each other throughout and then lining up to see it again."

But WTF is that supposed to mean?

It's just bollocks really isn't it.

Not that I care whether he liked it or not, but it is a shit review IMHO

:p

It always depresses me that majority of "professional" (lol) critics are more concerned with trying to think up witty "zingers", putdowns, soundbites or superlatives than actually writing a useful, coherent, factual and well thought out review.

Anyway, as you were.....

:D

Terrible review. The reviewer sounds like he's never even heard of the Spartans/Sparta or is remotely conversant with any history of ancient Greece, mythological or otherwise.

Will go into this expecting a Grecian Sin City - in the interviews in Empire Snyder says that what they are seeking to do here is create myth out of reality - the decision by Miller to stick with the '1 million' Persians, rather than go with a more historically accurate 100,000 for example.

Still, even the original story goes to show not only how spectacularly hard the Spartans were, but also the value of highly trained, highly motivated soldiers with superior tactics and psychology.

OOOO...he's doing Watchmen according to IMDB...

There is a "test-shot" frame of Rorschach hidden in one of the 300 trailers:

"Visited underworld bars and began hurting people. Put fourteen in hospital needlessly. Fifteenth gave me an address"

How can anyon take this that seriously? It's a comic book film!

Tonight we dine in HELL!

I just hope we made reservations (I'm partial to the shrimp salad!)

'Was she bound and helpless?'
'Ran-deee!'
'No, the owner kidnapped her, killed her and fed her to his alsatians'

"Give me smallest finger on man's hand. I'll produce information. Computer unnecessary".

Anyway...300 - trailers on Ross looked great - loads of SHOUTING VERY GRUFFLY. Could all get a bit Holy Grail though - "Just a flesh wound. Oh, oh I see. Running away, eh? You yellow bastards! Come back here and take what's coming to you! I'LL BITE YOUR LEGS OFF!" etc etc :)

Thought 300 looked OK when I thought it was an X-box game, not so sure about it as a film.

Watchmen will be shit, I guarantee it. Needs to be a massive budget TV serial in 12 parts.

actually watchment doesn't need a huge budget, but it will suck unless you flim it frame by frame and cast it properly (Richard Littlejohn as you've never seen him before...RORSCHARCH!)

eh?

It's epic in its scope, has loads of detailed locations and cleverly cross-referenced imagery, is packed full of fancy gear and costumes and the end deserves an enormously flash set piece or it will be comedy.

huge in relative terms; it doesn't need massive special fx budgets (just paint the guy blue ffs). It's not like any character has a flaming skull!
