20 best reggae 45s of the noughties

intermission on the chart is: "top ten worst things about reggae in the noughties" now up at http://www.uncarved.org/blog/2010/01/10-worst-things-about-reggae-in-the-noughties/

part two of me chart tomorrow all being well...

That raised a chuckle or two. About the festi's though if your talking about the euro ones, I got to say me and some Hackney massive went too Summerjam and had a blast though I think it was the company as much as anything..I don't think they knew what to make of us over there. They did do bashment parties (with dances) after the bands and I got to see sooo many artists from JA and do a bit of mingling as it was quite small, it was all good and I'd recommend it at least once.

Oh I don't mind festivals, just there seems to be a strand of music emerging for them which I don't like... some of the line ups for the european ones are mouth watering for sure...

Great stuff fozzie - thanks for sharing! I like personal lists like this rather than mean average best ofs.

That Chuck Fender – Gash Dem tune - im sure that was on a different rhythm - remember this track completely differently - any info?

Just checking your list now - I'd forgotten about that "Truth and Right" relick - very nice indeed!

I only heard Chuck doing that tune on that riddim but I think I remember someone saying it was a bit older than that, or maybe you just heard a dubplate version being so groovy and all? ;)

I think its my minds playing tricks on me is all, just remembering it differently somehow. as to dubplates im not connected like that - just listen to the radio really - also get loads of cds out the library - not that groovy really

i know you get lots of knowledgeable readers on your site, plus personal connections and all - if you come across a rundown of UK produced, or more dub system selections could you share it here please. I really enjoyed that rundown that was in woofah that time (I think ringo wrote that piece IIRC). Had Dub Judah's Babylon is a Trap as No1.

Ive not really been able to keep in touch with more underground roots music and would love some pointers as to whats been going on the last decade. I was abit more up to speed in the 90's - mainly because we used to have roots shows on the radio. Really miss the Manasseh and Joey J shows... Thanks

To be honest I'm half hoping that someone will do top 20s for bashment and uk dub in the 00's myself because I missed so much I think...

looks like Heatwave might take up the challenge on bashment

so much of the UK dub stuff I heard was really miserable and also badly done that I kind of gave up on it after a while - but I'm sure there IS good stuff in there, it's just finding it...

and yes, Ringo's piece is brilliant, exactly what the doctor ordered...

guess the littl'un takes up nuff time though.

Morning, I'm still around every now and then. Since my second daughter was born I've reduced my radio show to every other week but connection difficulties at their new bitrate means I've had limited success with broadcasts over the last 2 months so not much to record. Plus I've left the shitty world of IT and am investing a lot of time in new stuff so time's even more tight.

In the mean time check the roots sound system tribute I've been running and download some of the selections various collectors and sound men have put together:

Didnt want to start a separate thread - anyone know whats happened to Buju? I heard he got arrested over christmas on drug charges in Florida. Anyone know the result of this?

Was thinking about your comments Fozzie about internet buyers ruining the second hand market - I think thats really interesting. Ive been watching second hand old skool/hardcore prices going crazy recently, and fantasising that if i could afford it I could easily just by my dream collection. Sounds like richer people are doing just that. Is sad. Market Rules means the rich get the most access to the best things in life - in regards to music it wasnt always the case when it took love to find and scout, not to mention create for yourself.

Innit!

The prices I've seen the last few 5 or so years for stuff like Foul Play - Finest Illusion (Illegal), Blame - Music Takes You (Seal Vocal), 2-Xtreme - XTremity EP, Gerald - 28 Gun BBY, etc. is just mental. I'm glad I got a lot of these from back in the day, because putting together a collection now is just out of the hands of so many people :(

Funnily enough was just talking about Foul Play prices this week with a mate who bought at the time. It was his first peak at prices since he bought them and his jaw hit the ground. Have you got the 28 Gun BBY 12 - i think its white with a stamp (not the one where a cut features on the 'album' type thing?) Always dreamed of having that - definitely in my top 10 most wanted

*Enjoyed the link too - can picture East Row jumping, with that little tree shaking - so nice played it twice :):)

I've never heard, but am curious about and would like to hear the 'shake the foundations' (is it by fozzie?) mix too.

Please post a link if you can.

Another example that how in the entertainment industry it is ok for someone to be a rapist, to beat up his g/f or to kiddy fiddle and double standards always apply.

The Jah Cure thing always fascinated me, not because of what he did, but peoples reaction to it.

I'd never heard of him, like reggae, but fuck me is he shit. I listen to a few tracks on you tube to give it a fair chance, but it really is pants.

In fact if I hadn't heard about it on this thread, I'd have thought it was some lame arse R&B shite.

RIP Yabby You. :(

Would love the full 12 but not prepared to pay the money really... I've got Anything and a few other bits on Juice Box, plus the 28 Gun LP which is nice but like you say its more of a mix rather than the full 12" cuts.

*Anyone know what happened to Bounty Killer this decade - cant remember the last Rodney Price vocal piece I heard. Is he still going?

nice one fozzie, i've been listening to a lot of reggae for the past few years but have only recently been trying to track down what artists and tracks it is that i like, and your list has a lot of me favourite tunes on there
