The BIG ONE: Crystal Palace vs Cardiff City, 8th March

hiraethified
There's going to be at least five urbanites at this one (split between the two teams) and it's a big game for City - we've got to won this to stay in the promotion stakes.

Hovering just one point above the relegation zone, Palace have to win so we should be in for a magnificent spectacle of football with - hopefully - the mighty Cardiff City emerging triumphant.

Anyone else going?

Is it sold out? Tried looking on the CPFC website but can't see anywhere to get tickets for the match, only the next one at home against Derby.

Oh, hang on, this is tonight? Bollocks. No wonder it didn't come up on the online ticket booth then.

Hope for your sake they're sorted out the away toilets - worse than third world when I was last year. Total rip off. Otherwise a good atmosphere though.

I like Palace's ground. It's a proper old school affair with creaky wooden seats, proper crumbly stands and a proper, defeat-hardened crowd who get involved with the game and don't sit in near-silence like Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea etc.

I've not been in the away end at Selhurst since they took the terrace out & built the Holmsdale End. Wimbledon beat us 3 nil.

Have a good un tonight, those that are going.

Come on blooobirds is all I can say. I've got everything crossed.

Enjoy the atmosphere and game.

That was one strange game. Cardiff were all over Palace, we hit the bar twice, missed a penalty, forced your goalie into two stunning saves and still we couldn't score.

I like Palace but playing music after you score remains fucking tacky and announcing forthcoming commercial events while the game was still being played was rock fucking bottom. Shut the fuck up.

I'm sure the half time report on 5Live said Cardiff had no shots on target in the first half - must have had a major tactical re-think at half time.

Yep, that music thing is rubbish. Did they aaaaaaaaaaaannounce! the scorer as well - that's also tacky?

Cardiff were too busy showing off their clever passing skills to bother with anything as irksome as a shot on goal. It was strange game: it's like Cardiff were playing chess and Palace tiddlywinks: we'd entertain ourselves with well executed build ups with lots of passing (until inevitably losing the ball) whereas Palace just hoofed it up the park and went for it - a strategy that proved to be the winner.

We didn't 'alf come very close a load of times though.

Didn't sound anything like that on the radio, or from other people that were at the match. Sounds like sour grapes to me.

We had 60% possession, and more strikes on goal than your lot. We hit the post twice, missed a penalty and forced your goalie into two very good saves. And that's my opinion from someone who was at the game. Why weren't you there Mr Superfan?

The unbiased commentators were saying how James Vaughan was consistently tearing "a woeful Cardiff" a new one in the 1st half. They said that it was impossible to tell which was the expensively assembled team on the verge of the Premiership, and which was the team struggling near the relegation zone.

In the ninth minute, Palace threatened when Wright crossed dangerously and James Vaughan headed goalwards from 12 yards.

Bluebirds goalkeeper Stephen Bywater made a comfortable save and two minutes later Palace went close again when Vaughan's shot from six yards was on target but Bywater made a smart stop to turn the ball around the post.

Eagles frontman Vaughan went close again in the 15th minute when Dikgacoi flighted in a teasing cross but Vaughan could only send his header wastefully wide from 12 yards.

Jones disappointed at Palace coup

Cardiff eventually provided a riposte in the 28th minute when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas hit a 25-yard shot which Palace keeper Julian Speroni was able to save comfortably.

But the momentum remained largely with the home side and they fashioned another decent opening in the 33rd minute.

Neil Danns was afforded the time and space to strike a shot wide from 12 yards as the Bluebirds were again let off the hook.

The visitors, despite fielding three strikers in Jay Bothroyd, Michael Chopra and Craig Bellamy, struggled to make an impression on the visitors' goal.

You came out and played better at the beginning of the 2nd half, and things could have been very different had you not missed the penalty. That's football though. We set out to defend and hit you on the break, it worked. If Cardiff were so brilliant then why are their fans so upset on the forums and claiming that Dave Jones was tactically hopeless last night ?

Oh and btw since you ask, I share a season ticket with two other people it wasn't my turn to use it this time. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to roll up and pay on the night.

Sixty per cent possession tells its own story, mate, simple as. And you've seen han's comment on FB too. Sadly, some of our fans call for 'Dave Jones out' after every result (unless we've just beaten Swansea - and even then they moan.) But that's a different story.

Oh, and L_C: I know you're still hurtin' after making a right fucking arse of yourself in the tech forum, but please stop dredging your dull and tedious beef onto unrelated threads and forums. Thanks.

Before the Internet this used to be called banter, just simple football banter - fwiw, I like it that way.
I'm all for banter, but you've made this a little mission of yours and have been banging on about wirefresh all over these boards and it's becoming really really fucking tedious now.

In Drew's defence, Sky Sports News kept describing the game with Palace on top and described it as a deserved 3 points.

Cardiff had two very tame shots on target in the first half. But were much more dangerous in the second. Palace were the better team in the first half.

Palace didn't entirely rely on hoofing, we tried passing our way but couldn't get through your back line, so resorted to the long ball after that.

Palace also has a goal disallowed. BUt I have to admit we had some luck last night.

That's how I saw it. We were dull as fuck in the first half, poncing about with showboating passing that went nowhere fast whereas your direct approach was much more effective. We woke up in the second half and were very unlucky not to have scored at least one, but in the end the luck was with you. I don't want to see Palace go down as I like visiting your ground - although not as much now that they've started those dreadful in-game adverts.

That means nothing really. Wigan had 60% of the possession against City at the weekend but most of that was faffing around. Look at some of Arsenal's stats this season in games they failed to win. Well upward of 60%.
