Fighting Tesco Town - two more Tescos are coming to Brixton

I've just been sent this:

You are probably aware that Lambeth Council
have granted permission to open two more
branches of Tesco in Stockwell: one on
Brixton Rd (opposite Vassall Rd) and one in
the Kennington Park Business Centre at 1-3
Brixton Road.

There are already 3 Tesco metros and one
large Tesco within 10 minutes walk of
Kennington park, one in Stockwell and
another large Tesco in Acre Lane, Brixton.

Apparently Tescos are also buying or
building flats for private rental and
offering the rental income to Lambeth in
exchange for agreements to allow them to
open new stores and surgeries.

We are trying to gain support from the local
people and elsewhere to stop this Tesco
monopoly. It seems to be spreading at an
alarming rate!

I don't have business contacts in the area
but am trying to spread the word. If we can
stop this here then maybe we can stop it
elsewhere...I'd be grateful if you coudl
circulate this in your networks

This is not a campaign to stop Tesco or
large supermarkets trading at all.
Supermarkets, whether we like it or not, are
part of life. However we don't need them to
take over whole areas as they are doing in
Lambeth and all over London.

Our local Londis shop-owner has been there
for 26 yrs and is certain he'll have to
close within one yr of the Tesco opening
practically next door to him (as other shops
have). His is a real community shop. He
supports the local school and youth club and
even gives lifts to elderly people with
their shopping! He also told me that Tesco
want to set up a surgery so that would close
the Myatts Fields NHS clinic nearby. He
has set up a written petition and spoken to
Lambeth council but so far they aren't budging.

Shops like this play an invaluable role in
the community as well as provide useful
services such as phone + electricity key
top-ups, bus passes and so on.

Lots of similar local businesses, some well
established and some new and thriving -
newsagents, greengrocers, bakers, chemists -
will be under threat

I have set up an online petition to add to
the Londis one. Please sign it and pass on
to others if you agree that we don't want to
be living in Tesco town.

Tesco would probably argue that the density of Sainsbury supermarkets and 'metro' format stores in the overall 'patch' of SW London would justify their presence on these sites. Not saying I agree with them tho.

There's already two, two on Walworth road  And the Metro @ Elephant, nevermind the larger stores at OKR and Kennington, oh and the Tesco garage on Brixton Rd.

What would be more useful would be organising a 'I won't shop at Tesco' group that actively campaigns to remind the residents who are most likely to be affected by these stores opening to only use their existing shops and to boycott shopping at the Tescos.

Hello

I am a total amateur campaigner, I admit. I am not a lawyer and dont know the ins and outs of planning permission. However, I think theres a point in at least putting pressure on Lambeth and letting them know what people think, spreading the word and gaining support. I've just been round all the local shops who are really depressed about these new Tescos and feel quite hopeless. This NO MORE TESCO petition is just one part of a larger campaign. I agree that a 'I wont shop at Tesco' group would be useful and I'd happily sign up if you wanted to set that up.

I've just been sent this:

the Londis staff were saying that Tesco are funding the new surgery as part of the planning application, basically an above-the-board bribe.

sadly there seems to be very little that can be done to stop Tesco taking over.

Write to Kate Hoey might be an option via theyworkforyou.

Surprised they haven't started on Streatham yet. I think Streatham has 3 Sainsbury's locals and Tesco only has one.

Lambeth Council have done so much for John Lewis with the talk ot the 'JLP Council' that the least they could do is smooth the way for a Waitrose instead of more Tescos!

Although maybe JLP don't wish to work the contact...why would that be, surely they can only be proud to have thier good name linked with LBL?;)

basically an above-the-board bribe

It's called 'planning gain' and was a process introduced by Local Authorities to get some value back from giving planning permission to property & retail developers.

Campaign to get it stopped (altho has anyone talked to the staff at the existing GP surgery about this?), but the most effective way of 'stopping' Tesco is to not shop there, and instead continue to use the local shops that are currently thriving.

Yeh what did happen to the ice rink/leisure complex/housing development/tesco megastore?

Tesco said 'Thanks to the efficiency and competence of the Lambeth legal team, we don't have to rebuild the skating rink or any of the other things we said we'd build.'

Dont give a shit about some local shop. I'm not prepared to pay more when I can get it cheaper at a supermarket. These poxy local stores charge an arm and a fucking leg for goods. Fuck 'em.

26 years he has been there? Well wooopeedoo. He must have made a mint over-charging customers. Heart bleeds.

He made so much that, err, he's still working there. Still it's heart warming to hear your appreciation for the service he's provided for the local community.

I bet you don't mind all those local independent shops who stay open late at night for you?

If they are Tesco Expresses they are not cheaper then local stores and rarely have any of the big offers the metros and supermarkets have.

Who are these indy stores? Cost Cutters, Low Prices? Spar? Hardly independent stores. And you do know Tesco stays open late?

about 100m from the junction where the new Tesco is going to be there is a greengrocer, a bakery, a delicatessen type place and a newsagents. All of which will suffer/close when a new Tesco opens.

I've yet to see a Tesco which can satisfy the thirst at 11:30.

Greengrocers are cheaper than supermarkets on most fruit and veg, most asian and turkish stores undercut the supermarkets on most items.

In anycase these tesco stores create jobs compared to the low pay indy stores who just employ two or 3 people at most.

The information is wrong. Neither Lambeth nor any other local authority give Tesco planning permission to open. The permission they give is for any type of retail shop. There is no seperate classification for a Tesco. The council cannot legally deny an application on the grounds of it being an unpopular shop.

The best thing to do, if you don't like Tesco, is to fill your trolley to the top with all sorts of products, and then simply leave it in the confectionary aisle. I don't think it's illegal.

Yeahm take it out on the staff who work there, dipshit.
