Urban75's Album of the Year 2009 - The Countdown

belboid

Exasperated, not angry.
here we go then......

After over two hundred albums nominated and five hundered votes cast, these are Urban's favourite thirty:

Number =30

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II

14 years after part 1, and four after its announcement, another crime fuelled cinematic third person tale, re-uniting various Wu-Tangs

Mistabishi - Drop

Some drum n bass thing. It’s quite good, apparently.

Number =27

Röyksopp - Junior

Media friendly Norwegian electro-types make another jolly danceable album.

OOIOO – Armonica Hewa

OOIOO_-_Armonica_Hewa.jpg

Astounding work from the Boredoms drummer, who’s probably best known as the title character of the 2002 Flaming Lips album.

Number 26

Toddla T – Skanky Skanky

Yet another star from the centre of the musical universe, aka Sheffield. Groovy hip-hop with collaborations aplenty, even with people not from Sheffield.

Number 25

Gallows – Grey Britain

Gallowgreybritains.jpg

Punk rock that rips off Sabbath outrageously, apparently.

Number 24

Madness – The Liberty of Norton Folgate

MadnessLibertyCover.jpg

First album of new tunes in 10 years came out to rave reviews and quite a few Urbanite votes.

Number 23

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Debut album from yankee indie-poppers.

Number 22

Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse – Dark Night of the Soul

Is this a first? An album that was never officially released makes it into the top. Lynchian weirdness, with all your favourite alt-rock stars.

Number 21

Micachu & the Shapes - Jewellery

Grime MC who likes to play with a Hoover onstage, it says here.

hadaway and shite with your middle class yuppie shite

ding dong round 12

well, if you'd put some nominations in trev......

tho, technically, a re-release of some recorded in a toilet, sub-oi, shouty bollocks, that was fucking shit in the seventies, would have been unlikely to make it into the final chart anyway :p

Shouldn't that be 28 if there's a joint 30? :hmm:

I knew someone would say this.......

No, because they are Number 30 and 31 in fact. Doves are 29. The double 27 means there is no 28, but there is a 26.

If someone won a race, and the next two tied, they wouldn't get a bronze medal each would they?

nothing I care much for in there yet. Surprised at Royksopp, didn't think it was anywhere near as good as Melody AM.

Are we having the rest today or can I go to work now?

So far, I enjoyed the Mistabishie album and Toddla T. Not enough to make it in to my personal list, but worthy of being in the Urban countdown I think.

They go in for tempo changes and Slayer-style drumming but that's about it on the metal front. Everything else is punk-influenced.

Good work, belboid, btw. Looking forward to getting a few listening recommendations as the thread progresses.
