Brixton 'SPACE STATION' pop-up art thingy in the indoor market

From the Londonist:
Seems one of the themes for 2010 is going to be reappropriating empty spaces and putting them to good alternative use. It's not just artistic squatters, city farms and allotmentsgetting in on the act. Back in October 09 The Space Makers Agency made the UK's biggest 'slack space' available to the Brixtonian community, encouraging creative and enterprising uses of the vacant shop units.
Whether or not you wield the Brixton Pound you are welcome at the Space Station for a free arts and performance festival now on until 23rd January. Artists and theatre companies will take over the space for hours at a time to rehearse, develop and perform work. Peer in if you're passing by or step in and observe. This Thursday there's a series of interactive installations by puppeteer, Kate Theodore and at the weekend, Firstborn Theatre Company explore identity through masks and run a mask making workshop. There's also the Space Station Gallery exhibiting work by local artists and photographers, open even when the shop is shut.
Space Station is open 9-6 every day except Wednesdays and Sundays and it's free to drop by. Keep up with the still developing programme at www.spacestationfestival.co.uk.

Ooo-err:
Thursday 31.12

Performance: The Wake (Nusa Pavko)

The second in a series of performances that seek to explore (post)modern attitudes towards death and postemotionalism. The artist will be exploring her own emotions towards these subjects with the help of a symbolic body, recreating an atmosphere that uses the power of memory to promote emotional unburdening. You are invited to watch this authentic display and leave markers of your own.

well it does say you're invited to "leave markers of your own". those "markers" could be all sorts of things...

I walked past there yesterday afternoon and saw some rubbish-looking performance art mime thing taking place, being watch solely by the owner of the space and possibly her boyfriend (who wasn't actually watching, was working on his laptop drinking tea).

I still think it's good that it's there. For me that's a much more interesting use of the space than all the tea 'n' twee shops that have cutesied in there (fairy cakes, pickles, 'vintage' flowery dresses).

And even there, I'm being a bit curmudgeonly. It'd be a shame if it had been just more of the same. The market already has plenty of shops selling fish, meat and wigs.

Next weekend there is food tasting etc at Granville Arcade/Brixton Village

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE WILL BE TAKING WILD CAPER INTO BRIXTON VILLAGE (THE OLD GRANVILLE ARCADE) ON SATURDAY THE 16TH, FOR A FOOD EVENT YOU MAY WISH TO PERUSE OR PARTICIPATE IN (DETAILS BELOW). JULIA AND DOUGALD HAVE MADE A HUGE COMMITMENT TO THEIR EXPERIMENT THERE, AND WE HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT DOWN TO SUPPORT THE INITIATIVE.

KIND REGARDS,
BRIDGET

space station

I went to that Space Station festival on Tuesday and saw Ella Robson, some kind of student drama/ dance thing where a bunch of 30-yr old teenage girls were sitting in the window screaming at passing strangers! It was terrible.

But apart from that it looks like some great stuff going on in there. Next week especially there is a performance from Tangled Feet, a really good theatre company, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more.

Wild caper are having a Madhatters Tea Party in Unit 40 tomorrow (Sat 16th)

without being too cynical are the Spacemakers getting dosh from anyone for this. Is there a deeper agenda somewhere ? It's unclear from their website.
