iPhone users: name your top apps!

Kid_Eternity

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Right, seeing as there's a distinct possibility I'll be joining the so called iCult soonish (unless Palm pulls off a miracle surprise launch by June/July) I figure it's time to research the decent apps.

Urban iPhone users, what are your favourite apps? I'm especially interested in what the best Twitter app is? All feedback welcome!

Note to Mods: I posted this here and not on the big iPhone thread because I didn't want the suggestions lost amongst all the other stuff....

I am a big Twitterific fan. They've just updated it actually.

The other ones will depend on what you actually do. I use Things a hell of a lot because it's my main task management app on the desktop too. I play iRogue a hell of a lot.

New media stuff, news, games, events, gigs, cinema, restaurants, holiday deals, things that are useful like that cab firm one on Android are some of the stuff I'm interested in. Yeah decent PIM stuff too. Oh and any good blogging app, especially ones that work with Wordpress would be good to know.

But I'm also curious about what other people's favourite apps are (not interested in any stupid fart or beer apps though!). :)

Actually, in the PIM + useful stakes, OmniFocus is a task manager that apparently alerts you when you've got a task that is local to you. So if you've tagged something as involving buying something from the chemists, and you go near the chemists, it will beep. I don't actually have an iPhone (it's an iTouch) and OmniFocus is pricey so I've not tested this.

Now that sounds cool! Also, things like using the device as a remote interest me, whether for powerpoint or music or streaming video from a computer etc.

well if you use itunes, then Remote is a must-get.
the free Solitaire is very good, if you want solitaire. certainly no need to pay for it :D
um. wikipanion is more convenient than reading the website through safari

When you getting yours?
We can get them at the same time an have an 'iPhone Newbie Meet' somewhere?

i have an ipod touch (work insists on the crackberry).

but I like the following:

for fun: tap tap revenge - it was free one weekend. Brilliant game. You tap along to tracks, like some balls or some shit comes towards you.

utilities: Airsharing, browse SMB shares on your network.

pterm: ssh, telnet, raw console access. I have been sat in pubs and airports running metaploit scans against the network I am on. Good fun.

stocks is good for currency conversion: for example, English Pounds to Danish Krona you enter the line GBPDKK=X

wififofum: scans for wireless networks

wiifinder: scans for wireless networks and checks if they are open by trying to ping mozilla.com

snap: scans the network you are on and check for all other devices by doing an ICMP scan. Then it use nmap to check for open ports running on those devices. Using pterm described earlier you can then get into those devices.

I like the following

 bloody hell, remind me never to sit near you with my phone on :D

Fieldrunners is an awesome little tower defence game, nice graphics and very addictive.

Shazam is cool - you hold it up to whatever music you can hear, and it'll tell you what it is. Works surprisingly well.

FFS I did search for that thread but it didn't come up.

Well unless some very concrete news about the Pre being released in the UK by July comes out (looking very doubtful now) I reckon as soon as the new iPhone is available to buy. But yeah, a urban gadget lovers meet sounds like fun! :D

I use Tweetie :)
Me too - tried Twitterific when it first came out, but I found it very unresponsive and slow to update. I hear 2.0 is very good though.

I also have/use:

Evernote (note taking on steroids, syncs to web and PC)
Flight Control (excellent, addictive little game)
Remote (control iTunes from your phone)
Last.fm (internet radio and scrobble your iPod tracks)

plus a bunch of others that I don't really use all that often.

Has anyone tried Myst on the iPhone?

Having a lovely time downloading things fronm the app store.

I use twitterfon for discussing the lido temperature with Tricky Skills (free)

Wunderradio for all my internet radio listening - haven't tried it in 3G yet but it seems to work pretty well next to wifi - (it's a few quid)

Bloomberg to watch my shares fall and get all my nerdy business news (free - and a really impressive app)

accuweather (free) but it claimed it would rain on sunday and it was lovely.

Skype (free) but i only know one other person who skypes. And you can only use it in wifi areas - for now, at least

Tubedelux ( a few quid) or tube status (free) for checking the alarmingly frequent times the Viccie line is paralysed.

A whole load of free news apps - I like the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, BBC News, the iphone is very well served by free apps for news, which is great because I'm a news junkie.

Facebook, natch. Free.

Urbanspoon: a free restaurant app which offers you a new place, local to you, when you shake the phone.

Audioboo. the very trendiest twitterati do this, it being a kind of audio tweeting. Free.

Cylon Detector. For detecting whether your boss is actually a cylon. They frequently are. 59p.

My most used:

Flixster Movies - films playing at your nearest cinemas based on location

Last.fm - although it can be a bit flaky unless you've got a wifi or very solid 3G connection

Shazam - as previously mentioned.

Flight Control - the most addictive game since Tetris. Well worth 59p, if you're willing to sacrifice hours of your life to it.

Zen Bound - pointless but beautifully realised game, twisting ropes round wooden shapes. Is a whopping £2.99 I think but worthwhile.

Boycott the National Rail app because they're charging £4.99 for it and they stopped supplying train time data to the superior and free MyRailLite (which as a result is no longer available)

I was going to buy that but won't now, disgraceful. :(

I think that a 'iPhone Newbie Meet' would make us the coolest people in the world. Imagine the respect we would get in the pub sitting round a table discussing iPhone apps and saying WOW a lot and stuff :D

Don't forget the high fiving, we gotta have high fiving! :D

You realise that we are now in that dangerous area where we might actually have to do this meet.
