John Sergeant to pull out of Strictly

sez BBC

BBC said:
Former political journalist John Sergeant has decided to pull out of the BBC One show Strictly Come Dancing.

The 64-year-old has received strong support from the public since the show started, but the judges have been critical of his dancing.

In a statement, he said: "The trouble is that there is now a real danger that I might win the competition. Even for me that would be a joke too far."

It has been announced he will return on Saturday's show for a final dance.

Strictly judge Arlene Phillips said: "I'm always sad if a contestant leaves of choice, because you are always expecting to let the public vote them in or out - but John is his own person and he has his own reasons for doing this.

It was always my intention to have fun on the show and I was hoping to stay in as long as possiblee

When asked if she felt responsible for his departure, she said: "Not really. If you look back, we've actually been quite nice on this programme."

Phillips pointed out it was not been the first time a weak dancer had been backed by the public over the professionals.

And she admitted Sergeant had provided many "funny, funny moments".

She added: "Last week's performance was an improved performance. There wasn't a judge who didn't say that."

In his statement, Sergeant, who was partnered with Russian dancer Kristina Rihanoff said: "I am sorry to say I have decided to leave Strictly Come Dancing.

"It was always my intention to have fun on the show and I was hoping to stay in as long as possible."

The former journalist said he would like "thank Kristina and all those viewers who have been rooting for me through the series".

BBC One controller Jay Hunt added: "We are very sad to see him go.

Good.

It was getting a bit beyond a joke and this is a nice way for him to bow out.
But I expect someone here will disagree and say it is a disgrace...;)

haven't seen him dance, but have heard all the fuss, it's just an light entertainment show tbf, the fact that the public voted him every week, not major news and worth all the fuss tbh

part of the point of this show is to raise money for charity? the telephone vote pays a percentage to charity? correct me if I'm wrong, and this sergeant thing has presumably has raised a lot of money, if they are going to stop a future flatfoot from staying on the show, less money will be raised as the public won't be enthused into supporting the rubbish dancer, less for charity

aaaw, as much as the whole "keep john in" thing is getting on my nerves now, its a bit sad that he feels he should pull out. leaves a bit of a sour taste :(

Yep, bunch of sneering, pompous cunts.

Nobody really cares about the finer points of judging, nor the correct angle of your head poise in the Waltz. People watch to laugh and cheer along at celebrities in naff outfits doing something foolishly and charmingly archaic. The judges can sod off.

who is the next worse dancer to sergeant then? they will be odds on to win now, surely the public will vote for them instead, to piss off the judges again

surely you can't change the rules because you don't like who's winning?

this ^

ffs they give us a format, ask us to vote and then get pissy cos we (well, not me, but people who do vote) vote for the "wrong" people. he should have stayed in.

indeed... I groaned every time he was left in and someone better voted out but thats the nature of the beast isnt it?

exactly if you give the public the controling vote you have to except what they say - it's a fucking stupid mindless tv show ffs - don't know what all the fuss has been about!

Ah, it's good in a way. The judges getting all hissy and precious almost certainly means that Strictly is reaching the end of its lifespan. They've sullied the charming Saturday night entertainment brand with their antics - they were always witless tryhards who succeeded in making the likes of Cowell look like a genius, but they've been self exposed as pompous, self-inflated goons with this ideas above their station.

Apart from Len that is. His gentleman schtick will rightly stick

I'm gutted.

To be honest, there's not much to interest me in the show now. Tom' probably the best dancer and will likely win, but I don't warm to him, and I don't really care who wins. Last year I watched for Alesha. This year was all about John. And now it'll just be dull.

They do... we were the at children in need on friday and all the dancers and judges were there. Thats why they do the whole shebang apparently. It raises millions. They cant announce a total because its not available until the series concludes but is added to the fund at the end.

It must be available somewhere publically online?? Its the beeb after all

Not this year apparently. New guidelines say funds should only be raised for "related" causes, and as there was no clear link between dancing celebs and children in need, the charity aspect was dropped.

It's Blue Peter's fault.

Thats complete and utter wankery if its true... The celebs were saying how it was important to them that the money went to CIN....

The Strictly stars appeared on Children In Need evening, as did many other BBC stars - but the phone in vote money no longer goes to C.I.N.
