Not been there yet Ruta but will give it a try soon enough. Which Vietnamese ones do you go to normally?

the noodle bar in what was the crown and castle on the corner had always been very tasty, very big portions and low prices when i've been into it.

that one on Englefield Road if i'm there, or um I forget the name of the one down the bottom of Kingsland Road! maybe Song Qe?

I might try the peru one tonight i'll let you know how it goes. I've been in the one near the junction on balls pond road that's just a pub but with a proper Peruvian menu and customers, but didn't eat there.

I can recommend the Turkish 'Cilicia' restaurant at the very bottom of Broadway Market, reasonbly priced, good veggie/meze options, lamb beyti served with yoghurt is absolutely delicious. We've never needed to book.

Went to the Prince Arthur on Forest Road a wee while ago - very nice food indeed, but you pay for it - £100 for two with drinks, although we did push the boat out a little.

mangal on arcola street, and another one near the junction of shacklewell lane/kingsland road - quality turkish grub

there's a new vegan place that's opened up on dalston lane that im yet to take a peek at..i always end up eating vegan slop at the squats down the road so it'll be a step up :)

are those squats sometimes open as a cafe? i went passed one day and there was a sign outside but it disappeard i assumed they'd been evicted.

this is the peruvian one on balls pond road: http://www.london-eating.co.uk/6604.htm
but there's another round the corner on kingsland road just opened... i think i 'll just go to the balls pond road one it sounds good.

not sure. i don't go in any of them enough to track any decline or rise in quality, it always seems fine to me but it's just cheap eating so i'm not that critical. when was the last time you went in?

about 2 months ago - me and the missus are die hard fans of vietnamese cuisine. we've been checking out song que for 3 years now...the manager is a nice guy.

(their beef betal leaves wraps are still the best i've tried in london though).

pho are reasonably priced.
biggest let down is the service....

how d.you rate the englefield road one? huong viet i think... it used to be known as the best but i've hear bad things recently, again i haven't noticed any difference!

i not been to that one.

you can usually tell the quality of pho by the broth.
is it clear? dark? salty?

in pho language - clearer the better.

and then the quality of the meat.
what is it like? was the meat 'old?'

and you gotta be careful with pho.
alot of places hide the taste of old broth/poor meat with fresh herbs...
that is perhaps the most common crime in london's vietnamese.

ohh i don't have the pho there... normally the sea bass, you get a whole fish for about £7, steamed with garlic and ginger, it tastes good to me! it is a nice atmosphere too, worth trying, but like i say i don't know about the pho.

is it steamed in a giant (bay i think) leaf?
i like that - very homely stuff...

Yes in a big leaf... of some kind!

SO the Peruvian place, well the one on Balls Pond Road has shut but reopened just south of the junction, so that explains the mystery of why there were 2 peruvian restaurants in dalston. It only opened 2 weeks ago so it isn't properly done out, a bit plain, but the bar is a bit wicker and there's some fake jungle plants hanging on the wall etc. The people who run it are v nice and it is like a peruvian meeting place... actually we were the only people in there who didn't know/were family with the owners but I reckon it hasn't opened properly yet. The food was excellent though, and pretty cheap (like £3-4 starter £8-11 main) for lots. And they did a good pisco sour. I would give it a few weeks then go again.

that link to that peruvian looks good! think i'm convinced! may give it a try...

(the only peruvian restaurant i've eaten at is ichiban in brixton but they cooked japanese/sushi theme - guess that doesn't count).

i've never eaten peruvian before so i've no idea if it's authentic! i suspect it is though. the calamari were probably the best i've had anywhere... good ribs too. the egg fried rice type thing was a bit boring but that was just a duff order i think.
if you do go, be sure not to go to the balls pond road address as it's boarded up, just walk about 2 mins south down kingsland road from dalston junction and it is on the left.
