My First Visit to the London Film Festival

Maggot

The Cake of Liberty
Every year I tell myself that I'm gonna get it together to see some films at the LFF. Every year it finishes without me having seen any. This year I have some time on my hands, so I went to the NFT to get a programme and see what I could see. I thought I would would try and see a film that was on the same day asI was already uptown. Most of then looked fairly unappealing, but a film which was called 'In Prison my whole life' looked interesting. It's a documentary about Mumia Abu-jamal, a black American who is on death row for a dodgy conviction for killing a policeman.

I went to the box office and there were only 3 tickets left, I was in luck. I grabbed some dinner and went up to Leicester Square where it was showing. When I arrived I thought I must be in the wrong place: there were crash barriers, loads of press and crowds, people walking in wearing suits and evening dresses and a red carpet. But when I went to the entrance and showed my ticket, the burly security let me in. I was looking scruffy and unshaven and totally unprepared but walking along the red carpet. I tried not to look totally bewildered, but probably failed. Who's that ahead being interviewed? It's Colin Firth - Blimey! I'd have scrubbed up and worn a tux if I'd known. I walked in and was pleased to see a mix of people, not all smartly dressed. A number of people spoke before the film, it turns out Firth is one of the producers.

The film was very good a powerful documentary made by an English lad born in December 1981 on the same day that Abu -Jamal was arrested. It looks at Abu-Jamal's case, and the related issues of civil rights and the death penalty. It features interviews with such lumiaries as Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker and erm Snoop Dogg.

It's on a the Ritzy tonight and Sunday if anyone wants to see it.
