Train to Spain...

...from London.

Had a quick look into the prices and it's around £160 return down to Valencia - which doesn't sound too bad.

Anyone made the trip before, or even just to Barcelona? What was it like?

Ta :)

spanish trains are great and Valencia is wikkid (derv's grandma lives there).

DO IT

it ought to be cheaper though - why are trains so expensive compared to planes

You're right - should be loads cheaper - but I guess if I think about transfers from airport etc, probably not a huge amount in it (except for difference in time it takes :D).

I really need a break, soon and my little brother's moving out there in August, so may as well take advantage of free accommodation - even if it's a sofa :)

i got the overnight miro from paris to barcelona after getting the eurostar from london.
shared 4 berth cabin. it was fine, pretty tiring though.

That's the route I'm thinking of taking - then down to Valencia. How long did London - Barcelona take?

London Barcelona took from 3pm to 9:30 am, with a couple of hours for safety in Paris. I think seat61 reckon you can leave London at 5pm and still get the overnight train from Paris.

It's worth the extra money not to have airport hassle, though, and to chill whilst the countryside hurtles past *jealous* :)

Not sure if I've got the cash yet... but got plenty of hols to take from work and could do with a break :)

the problem with the miro is that it's overnight so you don't really see much countryside 'hurtle past' if you were to tgv down to montpellier? then change and into spain from there you would be able to do it and see the countryside at the same time.

Miro & TGV - they different companies?

Maybe I'll do the TGV on the way there - the slepper on the way back :)

WTS ^ ^ ^

On the train
Countryside going past
Cold beers with you
A good book
More leg room

No check in
No security
No waiting for baggage
Less chance of lost baggage

:D

Exactly. Getting the train to Belgium and Amsterdam this weekend has totally reinforced this with me...it is so much nicer, and you get to feel smug about your carbon emissions. We shall certainly be training to Spain in the future :)

I've been looking into this, but going the other way.

You can get a return ticket Paris/Madrid for £70(ish) if you're flexible. The day train or, morning departure from Paris to Madrid gets the countryside views.

At Madrid buses leave very frequently to almost anywhere in Spain and they are dirt cheap. A one way from Madrid to Granada is just €13 for example. The buses aren't to bad at all and often take less time than the provincial trains.

I've worked out a return trip based on bus to Madrid and train to Paris the Eurostar to London that works out at around £150 for travel. I'm planning days in Madrid and Paris also mind so, accommodation, food and drink will add much more.

Flying from Granada to London would normally cost about the same for a return. Although cheap tickets can be had for around €60 (plus the tax etc) for midweek flights in low season.
