Disturbances in Herne Hill on Fri/Sat night

Things kicked off a bit round in Herne Hill over the weekend: fighting in the Florence on Friday night, then closed Sat night on police orders; Prince Regent's windows smashed in on Sat night; reports of people attacking each another with cricket bats outside Pullens... does anyone know what what the hell was going on?

i think someone spilt someone else's pimms and wouldn't get their servant to pour another for the victim, words were spoken, and it all got out of hand. it's going to make things quite uncomfortable at the club on tuesday night. that's a bridge tournament where some quite nastly looks will be given.

It all went downhill when someone accused at the Florence another table of stealing their condiments.

Used up the last of the Dijon mustard I'm afraid, and Billy the Cravat wouldn't be sated with plain old Wholegrain. It was awful, he tied his cardigan round his neck at a peculiarly jaunty angle and stormed off, departing to Dulwich boating lake to muster support. And that's how it all started...

I had a stroll through HH at about 1030 on Friday night and it was fucking rammed - with apparently well-heeled, ceratinly well-dressed, definitely underage drinkers swigging from litre bottles of vodka outside the pizza takeawayplace, outside 3 monkeys, outside the Half Moon, outside Cafe Prov.

Musta been 60 of them all told, scattered around the place ripped to the tits, like Bon Bonnies had reopened as Boujis South.

Never know nothing like in all my years, so I haven't etc.

Same in Luff, I think it's the weather. First there were a couple of staffs menacing all and sundrie around the Thorlands, then it was kicking off outside the Robin Hood & Little John on Saturday early doors inna "yoove dissed me fackin' fammly yu cant" stylee.

Prince Regent's windows smashed in on Sat night;

That must have been after closing time, we were there till gone midnight, and it had been a friendly crowd. Though there was a minor infraction when a couple of "old style" locals started singing football songs, and were asked to be quiet by the manager, which led to an argument about gastro pubs and what the Regent used to be like, ending in the manager having a drink thrown over him, and the offenders leaving noisily. I suppose it could easily follow that they returned later after a skinful to wreak revenge, but the windows were definately intact when we left.

Is it perchance the end of GCSE exams in any local schools?

That usually brings out hordes of "apprentice drinkers" on a mission to get twatted and generally act like drunk 16 year olds around this time of year.

Giles..

I think it's just 'cos Herne Hill is now quite trendy to go out in.

Florence could be worse.. had a drink there the other night, staff are nice enough, it's comfortable. Would rather it was Ganley's though.

The Regent

Their windows were put through at about 5 am apparently, cos there were staff on the site (downstairs) until about 4am.

They'd barred some people that evening apparently, and suspect it was them getting their revenge. Which it probably was as the front of the pub is under the gaze of CCTV so you'd have to be a bit discombobulated not to notice them... They were about to watch the footage as part of their Sunday breakfast preparations.

But it did seem busy around there this weekend. Was it a full moon? Damn that Florence publican with all his talk of making his pub a 'destination venue' and bringing the lairy hoorays out. [Edit, just saw the previous post about who was barred]

Sadly I can't see 127 lasting now its got a big more obvious pub next door to it. Incidentally is escape still open until 4? Is there no where normal to drink around there anymore? Will I care once the lido is open?

I don't think they'll be too difficult to spot - there's cameras at the bar where they were arguing the toss for 15 minutes, and outside where they stood around posturing for a while before sulking off into the night, only to return later.

Cor blimey. If they've the pub neighbourhood scheme in force, they could get barred from all the gastropubs from in the area.

No frappuchinos or raspberry coulis for them, oh no sir. They'll be gutted.

;)

More seriously, if this was the chain of events, then I've a certain degree of sympathy for the 'old style' locals. They're probably still living nearby, as they may have done for generations, but there isn't a single inclusive boozer left in Herne Hill - every pub has been converted into cash cow gastropubs by folks outside of the area. It's difficult not to feel resentment when you've got folks assessing's your local's investment potential and making a clear and obvious move to change clientele, favouring only the more priveleged sorts who drink real ale and don't find it perverse to spend over £12 on a pub roast dinner.

I wonder if you are allowed to sing if you are wolfing down £10 bangers and mash?

Would you be asked to leave but be able to take your dinner out in a doggy-bag?

:)

Whilst I have every sympathy for those displaced by the refurbs in Herne Hill, abusing bar staff and throwing pints at them because you don't like the decor is hardly entering into a constructive dialogue.

Unlike me then. :)

I have no sympathy for alcohol swilling louts, no matter how long they've been at it in a pub they've come consider their own. Start a co-op or something, y'silly hopheads :p

I suspect that we have glimpsed what will also be the case in many other parts of town after the smoking ban - pubs will become a little bit more 'gastro' and more people will be outside them, milling about smoking or talking to companions who smoke - However they may not be as young (they don't even look older enough to buy cigarettes), or as well-heeled as the Herne Hill-set.

Well, a major benefit of the smoking ban will be a myriad number of refurbished beer gardens, back yards and forecourts, and about time too.

But they will all be crammed with smokers!

I hear the guy that runs 127 is about to become the guy that runs Escape.

yep, being pushed out of everywhere. Pretty soon there won't be any proper "working mens cafes" as well as proper boozers.

I went into Olleys on Sunday. Was full of middle class families with kids who you could tell ate there regularly. £13 for fish and chips

i'm with tarranau and minnie on this one. when i go for a pub lunch it's impossible to find one for decent money... fuck wetherspoons and their vacuum packed filth though. too poor for the market, so we are :(

"Know the menu." :D It's fish & chips!

Yes, but there's lots of varieties of fish and they fry, steam, boil etc.

I saw one young lad (maybe 10 years old) order steamed fish (can't remember which fish but it wasn't cod or plaice) with brocolli?

WTF!
