Crystal Palace/Annerley

What's it like to live there? Anyone know?

mate lives in penge. that close enough?
his flat is good and has gone up loads since he got it a few years ago.
not had any grief afaik and neither have i when visiting.

the area is a bit grey (penge) and some of the pubs seem to be 'local' and dodge

crystal palace is ok but a bit busy imo, annerley a bit quieter

I'm from CrystalPalace, and a fair few other Urbs are too. I like it, but that's because of the community of people I know down there.

Crystal Palace is good if you like:
Buses
Restaurants
Cafes
Slightly grimy Pubs with comedy lock-ins and open-mic nights
Shiny bar-type trendy pubs
Fighty-quasi-trendy bars

Gangs of yoot hanging around outside chicken shops (2 on the same street  )
Lippy small children who need a good clip round the ear

Bad if you like:
The Tube

It's alright. Quite well connected by bus/train/night bus. Decent green space. It's up-n-coming, middle-class massive density of restaurants but absence of cinema, (proper) live-music venue, club can be lame.
Depends what you like.
It's reasonably safe IME, but it's in London so you have to be aware of the occasional dirt bags.

Annerley is quiet but I think it's a bit pants in comparison to the Palace. That may just be local rivalry talking. ;)

I live in gipsy hill, just down the road from the palace.

I agree with perplexis, and can identify most of the pubs he or she are talking about from those descriptions.

I like palace. the triangle is just a big traffic jam but there are loads of nice restaurants. we went to a lovely portuguese one last night, the thai is great and joanna's is also  .

pubs aren't quite as stellar but the alma is nice, the white hart and the black sheep and reaonably trendy, and if you want a fight you can go to the puzzle.

the park is brilliant. it has dinosaurs, a pond and a maze.

and sphinxes.

there's a farmer's market every two weeks.

never seen any trouble. but there was a sign saying there had been a fight at 4.30 a.m. ( ) in a car park, and that somebody had been "attacked with poles" on central hill. like I said though, I've never seen anything or been even remotely worried at any time.

Didn’t realise you were a CP-bod as well, perplexis.

Think Perplexis is pretty much summed it up. I don’t really ever have the need to venture towards Anerley but IMO it’s major selling point is proximity to Crystal Palace.

CP is also good if you like:

Big parks with a bit of faded grandeur
Basketball
Far-reaching London views
Quality independent bookshops
Reasonably affordable places to live
Dinosaurs

It is not good if you like:

Supermarkets (at least for the moment)

Crystal Palace - good for telly box fans. The mast at Crystal Palace is the main relayer of digital signals for London.

I can see the thing with my fucking eyes out the window but can't get a picture for shit.

Yes, I'm a CP-ite at heart, but I'm not there very often any more :(
In my, very very biased opinion, that is the finest bookshop in the world  I worked there for about 2/3 years whie I was at uni. Quality! Reason enough for visiting the area some might say!

In terms of "trouble" I have had a fair amount, as have several of my friends. I'd say it's a relatively safe area, but there is some "action"

I had the shit kicked out of me at Gipsy hill station once, I think I looked at some guy wrong and he and his 4 friends took umbrage. And that was me off to hospital.

One of my friends got mugged (pretty violently) outside my brother's a couple of months ago, but that is a slightly dark underused alley/car-park.
I've had a group of yoot follow me down the same street and try to mug me.

I've had to chase after (and to my shame threaten with violence) guys on mopeds who nicked my little brother's (little fold-up push-push) scooter "for a joke" :( sad state of affairs that.

Used to have the odd shoplifter to impede when I worked in the bookshop, but that was no biggy.

Off the main drags there is also a very high turn-over of car wing-mirrors.

But, I don't think that's particularly bad for London.
Sorry to be gloomy, I just don't want it painted too rosy!

Yeah, proximity to that mast is no guarantee of good reception. It's as though teh waves just fly out further afield and just miss Crystal Palace out compeltely (or mayeb that's to do with it being hilly and reception being worse in dips, or summat)

After 14 years in Brixton, I'm up for a change tbh. Got a couple of mates up Crystal Palace way and although I've never really spent much time up there or thought of living there before, it's starting to appeal.

I'm starting to feel hemmed in where I live. I like the idea of a view, the green spaces and best of all, the likelihood of getting a decent sized garden. I'd rather hear birdsong than the gangsta tunes that have been blasting out back, providing the summer's sound track the past couple of years.

Transport: It doesn't seem badly connected for getting in to town. And OK so there's no Tube but the Jubilee line is supposed to be extending out there in @ 4 years time, isn't it? And there are a few night buses going out that way so I'm hoping it wouldn't be that much of a wrench. Brixton's only a No 2 bus ride away for the Ritzy or the Albert.

The shopping arrangements don't bother me too much. Not a big fan of supermarkets. I spend Sat mornings over in Deptford, which I'm told is quicker to get to from CP than from Brixton, and there's a good market there for fish, fruit and veg. Would miss the wholefood shop though, is there one in CP?

Guy at work used to live just below the mast - had a crap reception. Too low to pick up the signal.

Weird, isn't it!

Apparantly it is frying our brains  (probably - supposed to be a squillion times more powerful than a mobile phone mast or something).

Still, I like it, its like the Eiffel tower innit!?

Our very own South London Eiffel tower... it rocks!
But yeah, it's probably brain-frying.
I always used to think it's neuron-scrambling capabilities would explain the large proprortion of nutters that I encountered when I worked in the library (yeah, I'm a proper bookworm, I know,), until I realised that it's just that public libraries in general are magnets for fruitcakes.
I still like the theory though

The East London Line is going to be extended from New Cross Gate to Sydenham, I think that's what you mean?

Suzee Blue Cheese - I lived in round this area (Forest Hill/Gipsy Hill/CP/Sydenham) for the last 8 yrs and I like it precisely because I don’t feel hemmed in – I always lived in fairly rural areas before London and I couldn’t cope without the green space round here – if I’ve had a bit too much ‘London’ I go for a stroll in Sydenham Hill Woods and watch the woodpeckers

Yes, there is a wholefood shop called Planta on Westow Hill, it’s not the biggest/best but good enough!

As a periodic visitor to that whole Penge/CP/Sydenham/Anerley splodge, I find it all a bit non-descript to be honest, with occasional bad atmosphere thrown in for good luck.

I think it depends on what you define as "Crystal Palace", since there is, technically, no such place. When I say "Crystal Palace", I basically mean the Triangle and the park, but people refer to a much larger area than that.

I like the Triangle, for socialising, and for going to the bookshop and the wonderful delicatessen. I also like the park.

It's all much nicer than Selhurst!

So there.

splodge? bad atmosphere?

it's lovely! :p

I did say occasional, dearie - like 10pm in an off licence. I notice you didn't object to non-descript! :D

Don't know why I'm being so fussy, I grew up in Merthyr Tydfil for god's sake! :p

I missed non-descript - I object to that retrospectively as well! :D

My sympathies... :D I used to regularly drive through there on the way out to the Brecon Beacons and wonder who lived there and why? :D

The Welsh Development agency pay us to live there, apparently it makes south London look good.

* gets coat *

I moved to the area in October and really like it. It's very quiet and we've been able to get a much bigger place compared to where I lived in Brixton. It's really nice having so much green space etc and am really looking forward to being out and about when the weather getrs better.
Haven't seen any trouble although I've heard there can be a bit around the Puzzle pub. The lack of Supermarket is a total pain but the restaurants are amazing and very reasonable. If you get bored you can always hop on the bus to Brixton for the arghhhhhh factor!

And I grew up in Port Talbot... ;)

Lemontop: Sounds good to me. Hmmm - green space, birds, places to eat out.. And it's still easy enough to get into Brixton. We really don't use supermarkets much at all, Lidl occasionally. Sainsbury's if desperate - god I hate that shop.

As for the transmitter - people have been living with it a long time. Are there a significant number of fried brain related illnesses in the area?

There is supposedly some evidence of a leukemia cluster, but it's not exactly a prime concern for local residents I don't think. I just find it ironic when people complain about mobile phone masts and the like, as the TV mast is WAY more powerful and everyone loves it.
