Somerfield

Generally and more specifically Somerfield Camberwell

I have just noticed a sign in Camberwell that filled me with great joy - the big Somerfield in the Butterfly Walk shopping Centre is to shut at the end of April. Hoorah!

That horrible, expensive and soul destroying shop is apparently going to become a Morrisons (according to a friend who overheard someone in store, not 100% accurate) which at least will have lower prices and a better range of food than the Somerfield rip offs. I hope that any staff that are transferred to the new shop are trained up as some of the customer service at Somerfield leaves a lot to be desired.

The change is coming about as a result of the takeover of Somerfield by the Co-Op (see http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/article/ALeqM5g8Mc2XV7d9pc1E4727AEV9VmcHiA) which should bring benefits all round as most Somerfields will be converted into Co-Ops. Presumably then the small Somerfield in Camberwell is to become Co-Op.

Somerfiled is so over. I'm home at my parents next week and I hope we get a Plymco rather than a Morrisons. Far too Northern for Somerset. ;)

Their spuds are shite.

Their sweet potato packs are good.

Somerfield is my nearest supermarket and I find them quite ok for basic things plus, if you get in at the right time, they often have good reductions on things that have reached the sell by date.

In any case, as they have been bought out, most of them will be Co-op stores within a couple of years :)

Is this the supermarket in the parade of shops by McDonalds? If so, it has to be one of the rudest, least helpful stores in London.

The piss poor product knowledge and cant-be-arsedness of the floor staff and management team has stopped me in my tracks several times. I challenge anyone to go in and ask for cous-cous.

How does that make the current Somerfield at Butterfly Walk a Morrisons? :hmm:

Yeah but why is it changing in to a Morrissons when Somerfield was taken over by the Co-Op? What am I missing?

Think Somerfield was bought by Co-Op but they're not keeping all the stores - selling some to other supermarkets inc. Morrisons.

In order for the sale of Somerfield to Co-Op to go through they had to pledge to sell off some of the shops - so that one company does not have a monopoly in an area.

As there is a Co-Op on Camberwell New Road and another Somerfield on Denmark Hill I think they were forced to sell off at least one of the Camberwell shops - presumably they chose the big one to sell off because Co-Op's strength is in convenience stores format rather than big supermarkets.

Why they didnt have to sell it off when Somerfield took over Safeways in 2005ish I dont know.

i like Somerfield, i remember going in to the one in hackney and the burglar alarm was going off at top volume but noone knew how to turn it off so all the cashiers had that blue handwash roll paper stuffed in their ears.

Yes and its the reason why I as a Camberwell resident will do anything to avoid going in there - or if I find I do have to go in I often find myself walking out after not being able to find the right product/ waiting around for the one or two checkouts to operate or else just resenting the high prices they charge. As you say the management seems to be particularly bad shouting at staff in front of customers and generally being unhelpful.

Its not all the staff fault though - there are an 'interesting' range of camberwell characters that go in

This is good news; however there is already a large Morrisons in Peckham and a Co-op on Camberwell New Road. Apparently there's going to be a Tesco metro on Southampton Way soon as well.

its good news yes - Camberwell needs a decent supermarket to bring people who live in the surrounding streets into the town centre rather than having to get on a bus/walk to go to Dog Kennel Hill/Peckham/Old Kent Road supermarkets.

I think the Tesco on Souuthampton Way is due to open at the beginning of April - it seems to be the first Tesco in the Camberwell area which is surprising

Some of them are becoming Waitroses as well :)

Especially the one in Saxmundham :):):p

Perhaps, because Morrisons not Somerfield took over Safeways.

good point - but the shop in Camberwell along with several others in the London area such as Edgware Road was transferred to Somerfield

Competition bods made Morrisons sell a load of sites on - fuck knows why - in Camberwells case it meant two Somerfields 1.47 mins apart!!!

Morrisons IS getting better - but the Peckham one really is the pits

At least if it turns into a Morrisons the prices will be lower and there will be a better range of food - currently in Somerfield we are paying high prices for the poor service and poor product range: prices in many cases more expensive than Waitrose

morrisons in peckham is worlds better than the main somerfield in camberwell - it has full shelves, multiple open checkouts, all kinds of stuff...

I'm intrigued about this Tesco in Southampton Way - I've seen no signs...

This ^

Scummerfield's is well expensive, it really annoys me the way it markets itself as a place to get good cheap food when its blatantly shit and expensive
