Craft Club.. marmalade...

Right.. seeing PieEye lamenting the non-starteriness of our marmalade making, I just want to assure her that Abel and Cole are still selling Seville Oranges. Ms T can apparently come if it's next weekend (I can only really make Sunday I think)... but we're short of a venue.

I am happy to do it at mine but my kitchen really only comfortably fits 2 or 3 people at any one time... so someone with a decent sized kitchen will really need to step up I'm afraid....

Ruby said she might be able to host this -- if not I can but my kitchen's not massive either...

Yes, Eme also mentioned being able to host it too... I think the thing is that a sort of "open plan" type place would be better really than an enclosed kitchen IYKWIM... no one is going to have a kitchen big enough to fit everyone in cooking at once, but if we can at least all talk to each other that would be a start. :)

Just realised I can't do next weekend anyway.. we've been given the chance to go and see Cirque du Soleil in a box in the Albert Hall... I heard that CdS is a bit poncey, but I'll probably never ever get the chance to sit in a box in the Albert Hall again!!

If you guys are going ahead with it, I can get your oranges with my regular order from A&C which comes on Friday - but I will need to order it by Wednesday...

:)

yes I forgot all about this...
Is anyone still up for this on sunday the 5th? Our kitchen can be made marmalade friendly (would just need the big pots again people!)
Will there still be seville oranges?
Can we un-make it an urban even that never happened (sorry PieEye! )

Ah... I might be able to do the 5th!!! It's Kublai's 30th b/day weekend, but he LOVES marmalade, so it could be an extra pressie for him. I've been saving jam jars since our jam making expedition too! :)

I'm still a bit post-accidenty and having occasional bad patches (sore and tired etc) so I was dithering about this, sorry...

I'm still up for having it at mine - GG can you get some seville oranges in yer box next week?

toggle - thanks but seeing as how (not that) many people have expressed an interest I reckon there'll be enough room here for 6-8 anyhow... thanks though! :)

I doubt I'd want more than 2 jars!

Would be good to see you, Ruby, if you fancy it - let us know closer to the time if you like?

Seems pretty cheap again then - do we need much in the way of other ingredients?

Sugar, lemon, muslin, jars, discs etc... I think I left all my jar coverings and discs at yours when we did the chutney...

Right, i've ordered 2 kilos to arrive on Friday 3rd - I can increase/decrease this but will need to do so by Weds 1st.

she says 2lbs (4 kilos?) recipe makes 6 x 1lb jars - none of my jars are that kind of size so I reckon that'd be good... maybe - does that make good maths people?

4 kilos (4 x £3.15) = 6 x 1lb jars... and the average jam / sauce jar is around 350g / .7lb.... er..... and we are 6 people.... er..... just over a jar each?

ps have disc-y things, cellaphane, labels etc...

Shall I order more then... seems a shame to go to all that hassle for just one jar each!! So far it's only about £1 each for oranges, so we could do twice that amount for probably less than £3 each taking into account everything..

ETA... showing off my ineptitude with maths here... so far it's about £2 each for oranges... so it would be £4 for twice the amount plus prolly about 50 for sugar etc...

I was going to suggest using my granny's recipe, which uses a small proportion of normal oranges to make it less bitter, but actually Delia's looks a lot easier and more practical for a craft club to do.

You/we will need my preserving pan again (or someone's) I should think, and if it's double quantities we might need another big saucepan too.

<edit> I'd like to try and get to Unsound the night before, so I don't know if I'll be able to make it or not realistically. You can count me out if it makes life easier. I can get the preserving pan to someone beforehand though.

i'll be there..

i will bring 2 jars. about the oranges let me know what to bring ie how much to pay.

(i just realise i don't even like marmelade...but my granny does so it wil be her next b present)

of course the knitting will also be brought along.

Have fun, my crafty friends! :)

(I thought I'd stay out of this one, leaving more kitchen and jar space for the real marmalade fans.)

aww that's a shame zora...
Well for those who are coming I reckon if you come over say at 2ish?

Aaargh... complete disaster... just this minute had a call from A&C to say that they don't have enough oranges to fill the order this week. They say they have tripled the order and will deliver them next Friday instead (10th).... I don't know what you want to do... I won't be here next Friday... I'm going to Granada - where presumably they have plenty of the buggers!!! :D

Do we know of anywhere else we can get them??

arse.... even the posho waitrose / ocado don't have any...
:(
I won't be around next sunday either....

this place has them... if we want 18kg!!

edited: ooo actually they do it by the kilo too... will it be too late if I order now? grr it doesn't have delivery stuff on their site and the phone is an answerting machine.... shall I risk it?
