If the fruit looks like blueberries they're probably sloes which grow on blackthorn bushes.

Did they look like this?

Blueberries do grow wild in the UK but they are a ground covering plant, often found 'up the hills'.

Didn't realise sloes grew on blackthorn so cheers for that info madz :)

Those berries look like frockens, not sure of the formal name. We used to pick them up at Rivington Pike and Winter hill, as well as back home in Wicklow.

Is that what blueberries are ?? I think Frocken is an Irish term for them but google isn't being much help.

Whilst on a family day out the other week, we came across people picking Whinberries, so my kids decided to pick some for their ice cream, very tasty the were.

They look like bilberries to me.

Blueberries and bilberries grow on small bushes upto about 18" high and don't have thorns on them. Bilberries are about 5mm diameter.

Sloes grow on small trees upto about 20' and have nasty thorns on them. Sloes are about 10mm+ diameter.

I call them blaeberries but anglicised it in my first post for all the english folks.

Blueberries are not the same as bilberries link

Cranberries also come from the same vaccinium family.

Not wanting to argue about this but the photo ba put up shows blaeberries which, ime, are just little blueberries, taste the same to me(iirc)!!

I obviously need to do a taste session with both of them :)
