Brixtons Bazaar

Brixton Farmers Market has it's own thread so Brixtons Bazaar should have one also.:D

Anyone been to Brixtons Bazaar?

Looks like they have some decent quality stuff there, but it was overpriced IMO. Some nice looking bread, but sod paying £2.75 for a loaf.

They do sell cakes IIRC.

E2A: As said on another thread, it's a shame they havent made themselves part of the main market, but you can see why they may have chosen to be on the corner by KFC - more passing trade, including perhaps more people with a bit more money who wouldn't normally venture into the market.

I think you are right because i know people who come to Brixton to shop in example Morleys but avoid the market.

Brixtons Bazaar (The World Food Market) Will be trading everday from Friday 18th - Thursday 24th December outside KFC for Christmas.

I like the stall that sells cake and tarts, think it's veggie. Bought a really good plum and booze tart a while ago.

vegan and gluten free I think.... those cakes are LUSH... and it's fab that you can buy them by the quarter too...

*waits for AJ to come and make some crap "joke" about buying a quarter on the corner outside KFC*

Can you buy an eighth of cake or would you have to find somebody to split with? That sounds so Brass Eye

oh well.it;s been fun but tomorrow is the last day of Brixtons Bazaar,we have been sticthed up by the leadership of the coldharbour lane traders, saying that we have been taking trade from their members,no-one sells second hand clothes so we don't know what the prat is talking about, maybe he has a very close relationship with members of the council.

oh no - that's a real shame.... I can't see how you could be taking business from anyone on Coldharbour Lane - except maybe the foody places - but even then unlikely I'd have thought???

Will you be able to relocate to the new square thing when it's finished?

"coldharbour lane traders" would seem to mean cafes and the like, in this context.

Do they really have a leadership? :hmm:

If anyone is willing to support i will be setting up an online petition to have Brixtons Bazaar re-opened, as it sold items locals wanted that they could not buy from local businesses i.e French Sausages, Vegan Baking, Olives etc....

Once i have finished creating the website page i will post the link here, please spread the word.

Thank You.

Something similar happened in Covent Garden a few years ago. There wasa really nice German Xmas market. The shops complained at it move to Southbank.

so much for all these self made business types who believe in the free market.

The other thing I got to like about the Bazaar was that it kept the God Botherers with there amplified sound system away. I dont mind Jesus Freaks giving out leaflets but I could hear the last lot inside the Ritzy Screen one.

A freedom of information request has been submitted to the council by a local resident keen to know why the license for Brixton Bazaar was revoked. Especially as by reclaiming that space outside KFC, drug dealers had been forced to relocate. It does seem a huge shame that they won't be in the new square, which needs some kind of focus to prevent it from becoming a haven for drug dealers. You can track the progress of the request here:

Thanks for that Ms T. Why won't they be in the new square? I was wondering if they might (see my post above). Seems a shame too.

Ive emailed the Brixton town centre manager as it this would come under her remit,

" I have been told that the Brixton Bazaar that has been on the corner where KFC is located has had its licence withdrawn by the Council. This has caused local concern as the Bazaar has contributed to improving the KFC corner (which is regularly used by dealers )and it is also seen has a positive new addition to Brixton.

I dont know whether you know about this already. If not can you confirm that the licnece has been taken away and if so what is the reason? Can the issue go on the next Stakeholders meetings agenda?"

Yours sincerely,

Cant say I've ever bought anything from that market but if its been shut down its a shame... it definitely did improve that horrible fucking corner...

Bonkers as usual, but then yeh - its lambeth...

It seems that Val Shawcross is also on the case - she's aware that the residents of Kellett/Mervan/Saltoun Rds are nervous about the opening of the new square and the possible impact on drug dealing in Brixton.

The Effra Road group have been raising issues about the square. Up to a point I can see where they are coming from . Especially as the old idea of residents managing the square seems to have been mooted by the Council again. As someone said at a recent meeting i attended its a square residents didnt ask for.It was the Councils idea they should make sure they can manage it.

The Effra road residents group have been concerend about the square since the "consultation" about it. Theres an ongoing problem with how "consultation" is conducted in Brixton.

Valerie Shawcross does take an interest in Brixton-Granville Arcade fro example.

Just got the following e-mail from Cllr Rachel Heywood.

"Like many of you who have written I was surprised and disappointed to see that Brixton Bazaar had closed down so suddenly. I too had felt that it made a significant impact on levels of dealing and the feeling of safety in that part of Brixton, and I was delighted to have local traders operating in the town centre.

I submitted a complaint about this on 22nd December and expect to have a full response within the next couple of days which I will of course pass on to you as soon as I get it. I too hope to see something reinstated in the area very soon indeed. I should add that the original plan was to move this market onto Windrush Square once the square opens at the end of January, and that it will form one of a number of ongoing activities which will help to manage and prevent the historic antisocial and criminal activity which has long been a problem. On a positive note, I am really pleased to hear that so many people feel that putting something such as Brixton Bazaar in place has had a real impact on these issues – it is something which I hope we will see much more of."

I got a reply from the Brixton Town Centre Director

"I understand that the temporary licences have been withdrawn – trying to find out why. I’m also trying to get the whole operation some space in the Windrush Sq so that it can expand the operation."

Val Shawcorss's concerns

Here's a message that Val Shawcross recently sent to Brixton Police:

I hope you will forgive me if I am saying something too obvious but I wondered what thought you have been able to give to how you will respond to the opening of the new Brixton Square when its completed? Some local residents were understandably nervous when the project was first mooted. There has been a lack of confidence over the years in the ability of the local Council and Police to keep the area under control and there was fear that a bigger space might just be a larger scale venue for drug dealers! I know a lot of thought went into designing the scheme in a way that would be as helpful as possible to the Authorities in keeping the area well managed. But I think it would be a positive investment in the future if there was a visible police/public presence from the outset so that dealers didn't get an opportunity to 'colonise' the square (and the routes and streets around it). It would be better in the longer run if public confidence in the Square was built up at the outset and local decent people didn't feel that they want to avoid it at night. The Square needs to have a good reputation for safety from the beginning. Am copying this around to give people a chance to agree/or disagree that this is an issue. ?
