Hackney Independent

Well-Known Member
Hey all,

Does anyone know if Hackney Independent (who I believe are a group of ex IWCAers?) still exist, and do they intend to stand candidates in 2010? Trying to wrap my head around North London politics, whos who, and so on...

Cheers,

Matt

They still exist in as much as they have the odd letter in the Gazzetta della Hackney and leafleted the Hackney Against the BNP meeting last year to tell us all we were wasting our time.

But whether that means they will stand candidates, I don't know.

probably one of the best leaflets on antifascism and the left I've read.

Try getting your head around some elementary geography first, Matty. Hackney is in east London.

while elections are not at ll the be all and end all of HI heres the last two results from Haggerston ward where HI concentrated

may 2002

"Hackney IWCA candidates in Haggerston ward chalked up impressive results last night, narrowly missing out on a council seat. The full results were:
Total Turnout: 2269
Percentage Turnout: 32.15

Boff, Andrew The Conservative Party 435
Bright, Afolasade Oluyemidale Labour Party 802
Ellis, Alexander The Conservative Party 404
Rae, Benjamin Christie The Liberal Party 270
Sarikaya, Erdogan The Conservative Party 420
Sen, Nusret Independent 504
Sutton, Peter Independent Working Class Association 595
Taylor, Carl Independent Working Class Association 610
Thompson, Coral Christian Peoples Alliance 87
Tiyamiyu, Suraju-Deen Olatunde Labour Party 700
Young, David Labour Party 841

Candidate Peter Sutton stated "We are the official opposition to Labour in Haggerston and will use that position to put pressure on the Council to take action on crime and anti-social behaviour, to improve the repairs, cleaning and manageement of our estates and to resist any loss of community facilities in the Ward.

While Labour gained votes acros Hackney South - winning every seat in the constituency - the trend was bucked in Haggerston where they lost votes on their 1998 results. Labour are on course to lose Haggerston in 2006 or in any by-election before then.

We would like to thank everyone who voted for us, and there are a number of tenant and community leaders - you know who you are - who put themselves out to support our campaign."

Elsewhere, IWCA candidates did remarkably well, winning a seat on Oxford's Blackbird Leys estate and coming second to the Lib Dems in the Clerkenwell ward in Islington. Meanwhile in Havering, IWCA candidates averaged a massive 950 votes each but failed to win seats. It's clear that the IWCA is starting to make a big impact on local politics and that's something we'll be continuing to do whether there are elections on or not."

"The last six months have been a hectic time for Hackney Independent. Starting at the end of November last year, our involvement with the occupation at 34 Broadway Market brought onto the national and international stage a level of condemnation for Hackney Council which is usually only reserved for dodgy third world regimes.

Not long after the occupation of Tony’s café was over we commenced the Haggerston local election campaign. The result was a victory for the Labour party with their candidates securing an average 986 votes compared to Hackney Independent’s highest vote of 616.

Labour won every seat in Hackney South & Shoreditch. They faced strong challenges from the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats in Queensbridge and Hoxton, where, aside from a strong personal vote for Andrew Boff, the opposition parties achieved results comparable to Hackney Independent’s in Haggerston.

Of course its particular gutting to be beaten by a Blairite careerist with his snout in the PFI trough; a Trotskyite infiltrator and Cllr. Bright, but Hackney Labour party, feeling seriously challenged by Hackney Independent, threw all their available resources into the campaign.

Labour fought a negative campaign: their main trick being to scream of “chaos” if the Town Hall was to return to being a hung-council.

Most annoying was the dirty leaflet distributed on the day before polling day warning Haggerston residents that "a vote for independent is a vote for the Tory's". According to Labour we are under the thumb of the Conservative party!" etc

Well, I'm moving to N16, so I don't feel too bad about my geography...

Matt

P.S. Any particular reason for the 'Matty' other than to be randomly patronising?

But also - having been forced out of Hackney after 10 years by the hoardes of rich, incoming NORTH London types, you hit a sore point.

Good good!

The GLA seems to split the difference and calls it North-East London.

Matt

P.S. not good good about hitting a sore point! Good good about being randomly patronising. :)

P.P.S. My granddad was born and raised in Hoxton, so I'm sort of returning home after a generation and a half exile...

Fair dos. I loved Hackney but it breaks my heart seeing what it's become.

I moved there 15 years ago, it was fairly undesirable (estate agency wise then)

and Matt, are you in the village?

Damn you and your estate agent jargon! :)

I'm going to be living in Clissold Ward, which is precisely the area you're talking about.

some of that would qualify as the village, so it's down to the organic supermarket for the essentials, topped up with a visit to the farmer's market on saturday morning

i'm in clapton village myself

Glen,

Nope, I'm moving to Hackney because I work there and the large majority of my friends live there.

The potential to get back into both community and electoral politics, shifting the dead weight of the Labour Party in the process, is a welcome and exciting bonus. :)

One of the HI candidates (Arthur Shuter) publicy supported Andrew Boff the Tory candidate for Mayor in 2006. For a group claiming to stand for independent working class action that struck me as a big mistake. Will they make the same mistake in 2010?
