ok to rival the Power Tools threads ;)

i've just found a Milletts Catalogue from 1958 :D

(oddly enough on the first page is a 'Play Tent' (either Wildwest or Redskin design) which looks remarkably similar to the new Cath kidson one)

anyway it also has

217 Universal Tool

Ingenious continental tool, invaluable to campers, combines Hatchet, Hammer, Chisel, Saw, Shovel, Nail Puller, Bottle Opener and Screwdriver.

complete 30/- each

but sadly no tool for getting stones out of horses hooves :(

i've spent a while looking at ebay (luminous tent pegs £5 for 4) as the camping season is upon us.

recommend me a gadget to improve my camping experience or spill the beans on the most pointless outlay of money you've spent on an itam you've never used.

Oooo. I am the king of absurd camping equipment. This year I have:

One of these dangly hanging things from ikea, so useful when you keep misplacing phone, wallet, spliff, lighter, knife, etc etc etc in your cavernous 8 man marquee.

Some of these great groundhog pegs, they go into every type of ground with no problems at all:

And I bough a leatherman (£15 unused off of ebay) which is absolutely fucking brilliant. Although Mrs Vipper says it makes me more of a sad twat than normal.
 
someone nicked my leathermans :( (which i bought for 9p:D)

my silly/sensible/trainspotterish buy this year so far has been 20meters of silver space blanket foil to line the bottom of my new tent (which i serously reccomend you do every time you get a new tent cos it stops your body heat going into the ground).

i think it should be illegal to sell tents with black guy ropes - the luminous tent pegs are cool but luminous guy ropes arwe better

and in seriously spooky coincidence i looked at my one of those today as i got out the camping stuff and though roughtly similar but i dont have a huge tent
 
Camping is an alien world to me, ive always had the attitude if there are hotels why bother dossing in a tent????

But this summer im going camping for a weekend, so what are the essentials for a camping virgin?


Can you make me into a camping slut? :D

An air bed. And a double duvet. If you can carry them.

A bottle for water.

Wellies for those dewy mornings.

Beer.

Weed.

:) it works too (unlike some of my other good ideas). once its gaffertaped down it never need move and you can pack up the tent with it in it.

my camping list is:

tent
groundsheet
sleeping bag & blanket (or if going by car two double duvets)
towel & tea towel
chair
stove (+ pans & eating stuff)
cup
water container
pen & paper & scissors
first aid kit
torch
string
candles
clothes pegs (for making structures)
small rucksack
bin bags
hand cleaner
toilet roll
ashtray (no point in hotrocking the bottom of your tent it lets all the water in trust me)

but if you're only going for 1 night you probably only need half that (ands if you dont need to cook its less again). of course if you go by car you can take all sorts but sadly i cant drive :(

yep perfect (make sure its an adult one), thats what i started off using a few years ago. if i hadnt found a roll i'd have bought some just like that.

once you have your tent if you look for bits of cardboard or hay or long grass you can stuff that under your tent before you put it up and that will cushion you

i hope it keeps you warm. it has the capacity to reflect about 80% of your heat :)

just never EVER do what i saw a girl at a festival do and sunbathe on it :oops: talk about wrapping yourslef in kitchen foil

Don't look hugely practical to me, but it's the first time he's shown any interest in camping so I'll take it as step in the right direction :rolleyes:
 
They're kind of flat-pack origami crockery - mug, plate and bowl.

They're just flat pieces of plasticy stuff that you fold up and voila - eating utensils!

:D You're a braver person than me! What, no drips? Really? Wow. Now you just have to get used to drinking out of a square rim ;)
 
Hmm. Can't go wrong with the russian-doll-style-packing three part cooking set of solid fuel stove, pan and dish, with detachable handle. If you ask me. That plastic stuff is just asking to be bent and ripped. You can bash tent pegs in with the metal ones :)
 
They're pretty clever really - cos they're just a single piece of plastic, there's really nowhere for them to drip from.

I was just worried that the whole thing would unfold on me, but it's pretty secure. :cool:
