Brick Lane

I haven't read the book, so I don't know how good an adaptation it is, but I really liked the film. It's rather low key, very atmospheric and not the polemical TV-style movie I was expecting. It reminded me of Sophia Coppola's work in that it is more about characters and mood than about plot and considering most of it took place on a council estate, it was beautifully shot. I really liked the way the characters developed, especially the husband Chani, who starts out like a Dickensian buffoon and who despite his flaws becomes a more complex, even admirable character as the film progresses.

a bit too beautiful, i think most of the men in the audience will want to take Tannishtha Chatterjee home with them. It could've done with a bit more fleshing out of the issues although the subtle mood changes were well done.

I went to see it this afternoon at the Rio and it was great, imo. Glad that Reno suggested going cos it was well worth it, it is a great character-based drama that grips your attention, Nazneen is superb and her husband and daughter complement her, its oppressive (which it should be) and expressive. And i had a lump in my throat by the end of it too :) :(
