I haven't read the book, so I don't know how good an adaptation it is, but I really liked the film. It's rather low key, very atmospheric and not the polemical TV-style movie I was expecting. It reminded me of Sophia Coppola's work in that it is more about characters and mood than about plot and considering most of it took place on a council estate, it was beautifully shot. I really liked the way the characters developed, especially the husband Chani, who starts out like a Dickensian buffoon and who despite his flaws becomes a more complex, even admirable character as the film progresses.
