zac goldsmith named as tory candidate for london mayor

Greens would back Tory Zac Goldsmith to be mayor over Labour, says

Zac Goldsmith’s chances of becoming next Mayor of London received a significant boost today after the Greens said they would back him for second preference.

The multi-millionaire Tory MP for Richmond, a committed environmentalist, has been under pressure from senior Tory figures to throw his hat into the ring. He has publicly ruled out standing but sources close to him suggested he may be open to considering the prospect

For Goldsmith, improved housing standards mean on the whole, “not giant, alienating tower blocks, [but] high-density, low-rise”.

Sounds like they're planning to house people in doubledecker dormitory/pod type accommodation.

the newspapers were pointing out that some ancestor of corbyn was the manager of a workhouse a couple of weeks ago. i wonder if they'll do the same to goldsmith? after all, one of them was immortalised by shelley!

''i met murder on the way
he had a mask like castlereagh''

very smooth he looked, yet grim;
seven blood-hounds followed him

funny coincidence, or not, considering the amount of inbreeding with these people, castlereigh, goldsmiths relative gets a mention in ''masque of anarchy'' by shelley, which is about the peterloo massacre. goldsmith's mother's first husband was a direct descendent of the bloke, Hugh Hornby Birley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , who lead the manchester and salford yeomanry charge against unarmed peaceful civilians. these people.

Must be a different Devon to the one I'm from, because where I'm from hunting is a fringe pursuit detested by the majority of the public.

Especially since the whole 'countryside alliance' thing, where the hunters tired to paint the whole of rural England with their barbour-jacketed, chromosomally-deficient brush.

Anna Soubry just on R4 News doing a D.Brent impression..."oh yes, it's a very bad day, but on a brighter note here's a 'pledge' of £80m govt. funding to help retrain...blah, blah.."

Fuckers.

No, that's really the wrong thread...totally.

Time? It's 4 past beer o'clock!

Anyway...back to Zac's overwhelming victory.

Just for the record...(so we can be sure about mandates and all that...)...his popular vote represented 14% of Khan's vote (rounded up) and just 7% of the total Labour Mayoral turnout.

For people like me who are very unpolitical he comes across very well. He answers questions more honestly than any of the politicians and seems balanced and fair and likeable.

Weather by coincidence or otherwise what I've seen of him I prefer him to Khan who seems to so carefully manage his image and I find him a bit phony.

The only thing he's going in his favour is he can't be bribed and is not in it for the directorships.

As to his green shit, he's in favour of restricting development at Heathrow, which is just peachy for a man who prefers Northolt and Biggin Hill for his own travels.

What do we know about Sadiq Khan apart from his very public distancing himself from Jeremy Corbyn? Do we know anything about his policies?

He's a nice bloke, a friend used to work with him in his solicitor days. There's a good, probing interview with him here. He ought to beat Goldsmith as he did well running London's Labour election campaign. Providing the ES don't do the dirty on him of course. Mayoral elections are unlike general & council elections though. It seems very much on personality and not that many people vote anyway. It will be interesting to see if that still holds true for this election now issues like pollution and housing are such hot topics and people have got used to the GLA ?
