i had the misfortune to see a politics program with the usual bbc paxman lite westminister village geeks when they asked one emily benn grand daughther of tony and prospective parilamentry candididate or MP as were about gordon going or not !!!

imo this just about sums up everything that is wrong with politics all these fuckwits becoming mps when all they have done is worked as a resercher or in this case have the surname benn. And labour wonder why the grassroots and the heartlands are walking away never to return !!

I posted here about Emily Benn last year.

She's Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for East Worthing and Shoreham constituency in England's south coast.

You can read more about her here on the excellent CLP website.

I think she is great. She's 18, and is campaigning hard in a fairly unlikely constituency - in the 2005 General Election, the Tories got a majority of 8,183 votes, and the previous Labour candidate received 25.5% of the vote, marginally ahead of the Lib Dems' 24.3% - but in my experience there are few PPCs in such places who seem to put as much work in as she has, while doing A levels as well.

I think she'd be a fantastic MP anywhere. The fact that she comes from a dynasty is... interesting, but she has the passion and the energy, and why shouldn't she achieve what she wants? It may not be likely that she'll do so in East Worthing and Shoreham - though stranger things have happened - but any constituency with a winnable seat that selects her would be doing well.

As far as what it tells us about the state of politics... well, it shows that there are some people with a passion, and who won't let youth or anything else stand in their way.

Not sure I want to see Thanet lose the record for youngest MP but she looks more of a runner than her uncle. Can't help thinking that Labour's dire position will stifle her ambitions though, as Labour is very likely to be completely devastated in the South East.

Well Tony must be very disappointed with Hilary who is a completely middle of the road Blairite. This girl may be different but if she wants the Labour Party to have any future she had better start changing it from the inside PDQ.

Oh you colonials and your energetic ways. We don't ever run for office - we stand for it, and once elected it's back to sitting.

She's not an MP.

yes i know that clarkson as i stated she is a perspective parliamentry candidate - my ' or MP ' comment was sarcastically suggesting that she will become an MP anyway i really doubt that she is going to be contesting a no win area like most presepctive canidates as she is a benn full stop -hence 'what does it tell us about the state of politics

wheres vp with a ' if you had bothered to read my post' sarcasm when you want him :D

imo things like this damge the political process apart from being able to tell the differecne between lilly allen and peaches what else qaulifies her to take office her amazingly high iq and intellect perhaps?

Might as well do it that way. At least oligarchs directly protect their own interests, so it would cut out the legion of muffin-collared puce-faced excrementals that bob around behind the TV screen on the nightly news at the moment - the dictatorship of the middlemen. :(

It tells me that you're disguting hack.

How long does the dynasty strech now? (In the name of socialism and the commoner of course, just don;t want to leet them do it themselves)

So you just don't like the idea of politically active young people getting involved with politics then?

yeah cos thats what i have clearly been saying  no i just dont like anything which smacks of the 'hereditry principle' if she had actaully lived a bit or came form a totally different background as opposed to coming from the normal stale stable of uk politicians then fair enough but this is not the case ( closeted benn ) lo i have to say if by 'politically active young people' you mean activists/students who mange to alienate the people they should be engage with and treat politics as a holiday to look back on before sitting on the sofa reminsing about the time they were on a demo before wathcing topgear then my answer is no - just go straight to top gear

so you'd ban people from running for office if one of their ancestors had already done so?

It's says something about the Labour party though Marty surely?

i agree, but she has as much right to try and be an mp, as you or I, or even brasicritique, although i think he might be related to lord palmerston, so maybe shouldn't be allowed to run

Of course, but i don't think that was the point being made here.

I think Peaches Geldof should run for public office.

I think she would be better advised to run off a cliff, swiftly followed by Fifi...

Wasn't Emily Benn the author of some fuckwitted piece of shit in the Guardian earlier this year, along with some other yahoo?

I have no issues with her running for a seat providing she's not parachuted in somewhere - at least not the first couple of times anyway. But as for it being nepotistic...well, I couldn't possibly comment...

Not parachuted in? She's 18, do you think she's been invoved in community work for the last few years in an seat she doesn't even live in?
