Uruguay vs England (Group D) Thursday 19th June 2014

Badgers

Mr Big Shrimp!
R.I.P.
Seeing as the first match thread has piles of Rooney speculation which should really be in the Uruguay match thread I thought I would get us started.

Oh FFS. This is the third thread I'm putting my team up on :) I hope England are better at playing than I am at posting.

The back 5 pick themselves

Then

Gerrard

Ox Sterling Welbeck

Sturridge Rooney

4-1-3-2

Everyone in their best positions. Everyone happy. Team has attacking pace, defensive cover and potency in front of goal

It is going to be a good game. Hopefully good for England of course but both teams will be desperate to win this. Although both are on 0 points England have one goal better goal difference, no suspended players and no major injury concerns.

Will Suarez play? Will Rooney play?

They'll both play. There's too much at stake for them not to. No point saving Suarez for the third game if they lose this one

Not 100% on Rooney but am also Suarez will play, just not sure if he will start or come on later if needed?

He'll start. No point putting him on the bench if he isnt fit - imagine bringing him on and he breaks down again, you've used two subs. If you start him and he breaks then you only use one sub

Did anyone hear Tony Pulis on 5live last night?
He was making the case that great teams win the world cup not great players.
Citing the fact that Alf Ramsey realised that even though Jimmy Greaves was the best player in England he did not play him in the world cup winning team because he didn't fit.
But also saying that if Hodgson did rest Rooney and we lost the media would annihilate Hodgson.

This Rooney mess is distracting from the real issue: why didn't Lampard start with Gerrard on Saturday? It's madness not to have them working in tandem, bossing the midfield. Who is this Henderson anyway? Never heard of him before, doesn't sound like a member of the Golden Generation :hmm:

#hodgsonout

Uruguay will be fired up, they need to win too.
I hope we see more balls being played forward from England and not the tedious passing along the line of the back four, trying to give the impression of thinking about possession but in reality not having a planned attack.
We are the only national team I have seen using this tactic, it's something I have witnessed weekly in leagues one and two.

I expect Suarez to do something so shocking that he'll never be allowed back into blighty - paving the way for a nice 75mill transfer to Madrid.

We'll win the game if we play like we did in the first game but better ;)

If England play with the same pace and flair that they did against Italy, then they should win.
Uruguay looked very very average against costa rica - slow, unimaginative, predictable and with suspect temprement.
Suarez is the wild card - but he might not be match fit and will be under a lot of pressure.

My fear is that England will lose a key player to injury if Uruguay are losing and up the aggro levels.

And/or rooney will get red carded for retaliation (although could be a blessing in disguise if happens on 85 mins and england are winning - thus solving the whole 'should he play?' debate)

England to win easily - 3-1. At least one red card.

Lets hope their milk has gone off..

"Brazilian officials say they confiscated 39kg (86lb) of caramel spread from Uruguay's football team as it arrived in Brazil for the World Cup.

The spread, called dulce de leche, is extremely popular in Uruguay but the Brazilian authorities said that as it was made with milk, it needed sanitary documentation which was lacking.

Some fans are already blaming Uruguay's shock 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica on the lack of dulce de leche."

If anyone is in the Brixton area and looking for somewhere to watch the Costa Rico match next week, some people who post on here will be drinking at the Effra Social from about half 4.

Drop Rooney.

And no I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I've been saying it since South Africa, if not before. It's kind of startling to see it suddenly reflected in the media and online opinion.

Design the team around Sturridge. He's brilliant, and Chelsea were loopy to let him go.

Like diving for a penalty after being fairly tackled by Stevie G.

All that means is that you've been talking bollocks for four long years. So no excuse. Incidentally who in the media or in football, is actually calling for Rooney to be benched for the Uruguay game? Lot's of 'speculation' but not much more. Even Joey Barton can see it is designed to destabilise the England camp. 'On line opinion' is no different to media opinion. It's basically people who don't know or care a lot following the herd.

Most bookies have Suarez on the shortest odds as first goalscorer

Judging by his past performances it'll take him 2 or 3 games for his "touch" to come back - expect him to get frustrated and do something stupid if the game is going against them.

Even though he may only be 50% fit the defence will have to watch him like a hawk. From a Liverpool POV I just hope he doesn't do any further damage to his knee...from an England POV someone needs to inflict a crunching tackle in the first few minutes to see if he's up for it :D
