the price of duvets

a cursory inspection of the argos website reveals that duvets cost a reasonable amount, starting at 6 pounds and going up to 50ish for superluxury ones, with an average in the teens and early 20s. however, upon paying a visit to the local department store it emerged that the cheapest (in the sale) was 70 euros with most being in the 300s?! seeing as i've never bought a duvet before (have always managed to acquire them one way or another) what in gods name is so special about a glorified blanket that makes it worth 300 euros???
 
I have two duvets - one very expensive goose down one, and one cheapy one from Asda. I mostly use the Asda one, which was about a tenner.
 
Depends on whether it's Hungarian, Siberian goose down and whether it's goose down and feathers or whether it's goose feathers and goose down or whether it's duck feathers and down or if it's synthetic etc.

oh and Canadian Snow Goose is even more expensive than Hungarian and Siberian
 
Argos is great for things like this. They're one of the biggest buyers of homewares so can afford to sell much cheaper than most other places.

Unless you're after particularly fluffy goose feathered softness. A basic duvet needn't cost you much more than £20.
 
I got a double goose feather duvet for £40 from Debenhams. THis is a good time to buy them.
 
I think it's well worth spending a bit extra to get a decent duvet. I've got a duck down and eider one that I wouldn't swap for anything. Can't remember how much it cost (I doubt it was terribly expensive tbh) but I know that it was well worth every penny. :)
 
I paid £150 for mine in Marks and Spencers !

Sainsbury`s have them on offer just now ............ Not very good quality but will do a turn :)

I bought myself a Hungarian Goose Down pillow for Christmas. It's lovely. :cool:

There's absolutely no support in it though so I have one of those Chinese box ones underneath. I don't think I can afford a duvet. The pillow cost nearly £50 :eek:

I think this website charges over the odds, but I couldn't be arsed to go out and look for one

I was brought up on the cheapest and nastiest argos duvets and decided after a bout of dreams/crap-duvet-hallucinations one freezing morning to buy a fuck off new duvet. I spent about £65 on new 100% organic virgin-friendly sheets and a goose duvet. I have never been so fucking happy in my life. It's just over two months since I got that, so what £1/night for sheer perfection.

And that doesn't even touch on the more relaxed feeling during the day after a perfect nights sleep.

Don't scrimp on this shit, it pays for itself in life.

yeah, but that's assuming they've got them.

Loads of people are ordering stuff that's showing as available only to get an email saying it's not (as happened with my kettle) :mad:
 
To be honest, I'm happy enough with my pleb duvet as well. Rogue feathers get my goat, and my nose.

I like the feeling of plush bedwear in a posh hotel, but some good sheets and a decentish duvet keep me (easily) pleased at home.

I'm happy enough with my synthetic one as well, although after getting my Hungarian goose down pillow, it would be nice to see what the duvet's like but I refuse to spend that much :D

that does sound overpriced as i got a siberian goose down pillow for that kinda price at john lewis
 
I avoid down duvets - there is often no way of telling whether the down has originated from birds that are 'live-plucked' or whether it is collected loose (which is much more expensive). Both Hungarian and Siberian down may well be plucked from live birds - they can withstand several pluckings before dying. As an animal lover there's no way I could buy a product that may have been produced in that way!
