The Great Tesco Takeover of Pubs - list them here

Minnie_the_Minx

someinenhhanding menbag and me ah bollox
After speaking to someone today about the George IV and being informed of another pub being made into a Tesco, I wondered how many others pub around the country have been turned into a Tesco (or other supermarket giant). Not all of these have become pubs yet, but looks like they're going to be.

Feel free to list them here

Russell Hotel/Brady's (Brixton Road)
George IV/Music Bar (Brixton Hill) - ok, it hasn't yet, but it's probably going to be
Chell's Family Pub, Stevenage
The Wheatsheaf, Heacham, Norfolk
The Rising Run, Reading Road, Burghfield, Reading
The Royal Oak, West Hill, Portishead, Somerset
The Pelican Pub, Letchworth, Herts
The Wey Inn/Godalming Arms, Surrey
The Grove Tavern, junction of Kingston Road and Morden Road (despite there being another Tesco Express 500 yards away)
North Pole Pub, Kensington
Swan and Sugarloaf, South Croydon
The Chequers Pub, Orton Wistow, Peterborough
Bristol House, Milton Road, Weston-Super-Mare
The Whistler, Leeds Road, Dewsbury
The Cross Keys, Kings Street, Lincolnshire
The Merry Monk, Brownsover, Rugby
Wilthorpe Pub, Huddersfield Road, Barnsley
Grey Horse Pub, Halifax Road, Huddersfield
Three Elms Pub, Clarence Road, Windsor
Bulls Eye Pub, Sholing, Southampton
The Market Pub, Grimsby
Crown Hotel, Boston Spa
Railway Hotel, Shafter Road, Dagenham
The Beacon, Oxlow Lane, Dagenham
The Marsham Arms, Waterhouse Lane, Chelmsford
Upper Red Lion, Herne Bay (triumphed over Tesco!) but being turned into flats instead :(
Red Squirrel Pub, Slough
North Star Pub, North Hyde Lane,
The Cups Pub, Wantz Road, Maldon

That's just a few of them, and there's this Guardian article

and Tescopoly

but I think having a list makes you realise just how many pubs they're taking over, so feel free to add to the list

The Mayflower ...Rhoose .......now an Express since 2010

Looks like "the pub is now closed, blah blah, blah blah, Customers blah blah, for supporting the pub, thank you blah, Every Little Helps.

Maybe the second line is in Welsh? :hmm:

It was a great family-run local with a real mix of characters. IIRC in the late 90's/early naughties they suffered a pretty violent robbery one night, which led the landlord and landlady to sell up and move back to Ireland. After that the place lost all it's sense of community and was often frequented by some very dodgy fuckers indeed. By the time it shut down it had lost most of it's regulars, and was known locally as The Nose and Crown instead :hmm:

It's a real shame, because I can only think of one other pub that's within a 15 min walk of there in any direction, and that's been dying on it's arse for years too. It was closed for quite a long time, and there was rumour for ages that it was going to turn into a Wetherspoon, much to my excitement as you can imagine ;) but now we're stuck with a shitty Tesco that sells limited choice of overpriced crap (whilst undercutting all the other local shops on the basics like milk and bread etc) it's only saving grace being that it's now home to the only free cash machine within a 15-20 min walk of Crown Point.

the orange tree, friern barnet

there used to be four or five pubs in friern barnet, the orange tree's a tescos, the duck became a restaurant about 20 years ago, the triumph seems shut down, and the next pub nearer woodhouse college is members only. i think there's some small pub there: but nothing to right home about.

Sainsbury's seem a bit slow off the mark compared to Tesco when it comes to pub takeovers

The Grey Horse on Halifax Road in Hudds is still a pub.

The Shears down the road is turning into a Coop though.

Ah well, didn't look into the details of all the pubs, so may have got some wrong. Was probably proposed though

Tesco have been trying to buy loads of places round there so it wouldn't surprise me. Even though it's in a shit location with barely any foot traffic.

In the village not far away they tried to buy a massive old mill which is now an antiques shop, were refused, then the car park for the local park/woods and were refused again:D

Found this little vid about it. Have mixed feelings I think.

Mind you, Tescos . . . church, could there be a half decent wine section?
