The Big Supermarkets on the A23 between Streatham and end of Brixton Road - list!

OK, so as there's so much talk about supermarkets and proposed new supermarkets in Brixton and the adjoining areas, I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to the big supermarkets (with a couple of the smaller ones stuck in), just so we can see how many there are.

I initially started a list of supermarkets from the superstore in Streatham going down to Brixton Sainsbury's (next to the tube), but thought the Brixton Road/Kennington urbanites might be put out, so have extended my list down to the end of Brixton Road.

Here's my list so far. Please feel free to add to it.

Sainsbury's Superstore - 480 Streatham High Road
Sainsbury's Local - 172-176 Streatham High Road
Sainsbury's Local - 47a Streatham Hill
Sainsbury'sLocal - 266 Brixton Hill
Sainsbury's Local - 76 Brixton Hill (new store)
Sainsbury's - 425 Brixton Road

Tesco - 386 Streatham High Road (proposed new store where Streatham Ice Rink was)
Tesco Express/Metro - 42-50 Streatham High Road
Tesco Express/Metro - 330 Brixton Road
Tesco (near Vassal Road) - proposed development
Tesco (Business Park) - proposed development

Morrison's - Streatham High Road
Co-op - Streatham High Road
Lidl - Streatham High Road
Marks & Spencer - Brixton Road
Iceland - Streatham High Road
Iceland - Brixton High Road

So, according to Google maps, Streatham Common to the end of Brixton Road (near Kennington Park) is 4.8 miles. This, going by the most direct route is a 13-minute drive according to Google maps. Obviously that's assuming you don't get stuck in Streatham High Road or anywhere else!

So in total there will be 17 supermarkets in approx 4.8 miles or one every 0.2 of a mile? That seems excessive. Especially as several of these stores aren't even very good in what they stock so I feel like they are taking over for the sake of taking over rather because they actually improve things for people...

why would you think they are motivated by improving things for people? They are motivated by profit.

Yeah but a lot of them are effectively chain store corner shops rather than 'supermarkets' in the true sense of the word.

I think the word 'big' in the title refers to the ownership (big corporations) rather than the size of the actual shop......

Most of those are in Streatham though ?

Sorry, but are you saying Brixton Hill isn't Brixton? Anyway, I know they're in Streatham, but as there's no Streatham forum, I listed them in Brixton ;)

and, as I'm referring to supermarkets north and south of Brixton, it counts, as I'm making Brixton the central point, or rather, the A23

ah fuck it, there's always one

Correct

So the thread is "The Big Supermarkets in Brixton", in the Brixton forum, and you felt it necessary to list 9 supermarkets in Streatham? :p

If I had "The Big Supermarkets on the A23", people would have asked why I've only done it from Streatham to Kennington with the inclusion of Streatham Place and Acre Lane Tescos.

They're a finicky lot those Brixton urbanites

Sainsbury's - 425 Brixton Road

Tesco - 386 Streatham High Road (proposed new store where Streatham Ice Rink was) (4)
Tesco Express/Metro - 42-50 Streatham High Road (5)
Tesco Express/Metro - 30 Streatham Place (6)
Tesco Superstore - Acre Lane

Marks & Spencer - Brixton Road

The thread should have really been titled...

"The Big Supermarkets in Streatham - list"

or at a push...

"The Big Supermarkets in Streatham and Brixton - list"

If you're counting the surrounding areas too, then why not also list the supermarkets in Camberwell, Clapham, Vauxhall, Norwood etc which all fall within the same distance as some of the Streatham supermarkets you've listed ?

Because you can't change the sodding title

I'm already expecting Tulse Hillers, Herne Hillers, Claphamites etc. to come barging into this thread demanding to know why they've been left off :D

As I said, was sticking pretty much to the A23 :p, ie. one long road, rather than veering off to neighbouring areas

If you're going to get argumentative, I'm going to close this thread

What's the obsession with the A23?

Are you a closet town planner?

Well I'm just imagining that if you wanted to take a nice, long, straight walk, without veering off into any side roads, how many of the big supermarkets you'd have a pick of if you needed to do some shopping

Bit of a derail.

But do you think there's more fried chicken places than supermarkets on this stretch?

What kind of space cadet walks in a long, straight line, never veering off to one side or other? Does this phobia have a name? Or is it more of an OCD type thing?

Now which stretch are you talking about? Brixton Hill, Streatham to Brixton Hill, Streatham to Brixton town centre, Brixton Hill to Brixton town centre, of Streatham to Kennington?

Was thinking from Brixton M&S to Streatham Common's Sainsbury.
And include Acre Lane and that horrible Tesco's Metro at Streatham Place.

I reckon it'll be pretty close - with there being more market chains.

It's funny, cos when I first moved to the area (around 10 years ago), I made a joke of counting fried chicken shops.
How things have changed.
