I really enjoyed reading about the Angel's association with a music hall act called The Royal Zanettos at the turn of the century.

As well as being performers they were also publicans at the Angel for a while.

I tried to see if they ever played the Brixton Empress or Brixton Theatre, but couldn't find anything. Can anyone find any other local connections to them?

^^^^Aged 25 and running a pub

Love those old pictures of the pub:

There seems to have been a trend in the early 1900s of getting all the locals from a pub to stand outside and get a photo - like this:

The%20Tower.jpg

I assume it was because decent photography was becoming available for the first time and people wanted to record social stuff. There's some fantastic pictures in the Marquis of Lorne of all the locals standing outside the pub in the 1930s. The photo was then repeated by locals a few years ago. I'll try to remember to get pics of them so I can post them up some time.

E2A: just noticed there is a guy in a babysuit holding a monkey, wtf  :D

I think babysuit guy is listed as a clown. Monkeys were/still are (in some countries) common in entertainment

Hello to those of you who've commented on the photo which, like the postcard, is part of my website www.TheRoyalZanettos.com. This photo also prompted the following message from The Grand Order of Water Rats:
The picture seems to be for July 29th about 1914, as Brinsworth House was not opened till 1911.
The Fete advertised is for Brinsworth and this was a home for retired showbiz artists sponsored by
various charities such as The Grand Order of Water Rats and the E.A.B.F.
The guy with the monkey is my great-uncle George Bale of The Royal Zanettos, who also performed solo as George Zanetto. The Bale brothers owned various pubs, including The Tower, Westminster Bridge Rd., which is where this particular photo was taken.
My grandfather William "Pip" Bale got interested in photography in the early 1900s, and because the Zanettos were in music-hall, there are many photos of them both for professional purposes and also for fun!

I was going to sat do they have any connection with Fred Karno but I can see from the website that they do.

Make you wonder whether Chaplin and Stan Laurel ever visited the pub.

I love all these comments! And want you all to know how gratifying it is for me, living in France, to hear from people who live in Brixton, reminding me of childhood memories of South London and bringing to life all the hours of research :) I wanted to share a Brixton newspaper clipping with you (pdf or jpg) but can't figure out how to do it - can someone help please?
