Stop the Brixton Road Tesco: public meeting, Brixton Rd Youth Centre

Brixton Hatter

Home is south London mate
As mentioned on other threads, Tesco are trying to build TWO new stores within 100 yards of each other on Brixton Road - one in the old Russell Hotel pub, and one in the Kennington Business Centre.

These new stores will threaten a wonderful row of shops at the north end of Brixton Road.

There's a public meeting TONIGHT (Monday 9th May) at the Brixton Road Youth Centre (corner of Vassell Road/Brixton Road, opposite the old Russell Hotel) and Tesco will be there, so please come along and let them know what you think about their plans.

The Russell Hotel pub ? But they already have a store a few mins walk away at the petrol garage on Brixton Road ?

Absolutely mental.

Yep, absolutely mental. Three Tesco Metros within about 500 yards of each other (not to mention the big one on Acre Lane, the one on Tulse Hill etc.) Clearly the strategy is to kill off all the local/independent shops in that row at the top of the road.

And there was talk on here a couple of weeks ago about Tescos buying Brady's and turning it into a Tesco Metro.

Anyone know whats happening to the Russell Hotel site? - I walk past regularly and nothing seems to have happened, theres still a sign up saying for rent. You would have thought that a ruthless operator like tesco would have been in and trading by now or have they given up in the face of local opposition?

There's also another Tesco metro type shop in the new flat development (in the old freeman's building) on Clapham Road.

It's still gonna be a tesco afaik - they already own the site and have put in various planning applications (for minor things like aircon units) which will probably have been approved by now (I'll check). There was some question about delivery lorries and where they would park/turn round etc, and a few other minor traffic issues, but they all looked like surmmountable problems. They didn't even need to apply for change of use IIRC. Last time I looked at all this, it looked like a done deal and very little that could have been done by way of protest/opposition. I believe work has already started on the site....I've certainly seen some builders going in and out, though that was at least a month or two ago and nothing appears to have happened since.

I'll see if I can find out more.

As for the other proposed tesco at the end of brixton road in the Kennington Park business building, i dont think there's any permissions for that as yet....

Looks from Lambeth planning database like a load of new applications have just been put in (during August) for shopfronts, ramps, illuminated signs, a cashpoint etc. Looks like it's coming people :(

On the plus side, it looks like Tesco took some photos of the interior of the pub which happen to be on the planning website. THey're pretty grainy but I'll see if there's any more.... http://planning-docs.lambeth.gov.uk/AnitePublicDocs/00285087.pdf

So its all go - Tesco coming soon

In addition I saw when I walked past yesterday that they have applied for an alcohol licence

It's still due to become a Tesco store.

They have a number of applications in with the council at the moment re the building, and I have requested that they go to Planning Committee rather than be decided by Officers. That means they take a bit longer to be dealt with and will be decided on in public, giving anyone who wishes to object a chance to do so.

Though please note - objections would need to be made on substantive planning grounds related to their specific applications (e.g. permission to do certain things in a conservation area). Objections that aren't related to that are likely to be ruled-out by the Chair.

Once the council tell me which Planning Committee the items are scheduled for, I'll post the date up here.

That building is really good looking with the columns- I thought it was going to be a bijou hotel when it was fixed up when it was first renovated- a few years ago?
Anyway pity they couldn't respect it with a more architectural considered frontage- The signage is way too big and a fugly blue and red. I suspect more changes to the facade will be forthcoming.

you lot need some lessons from stokes croft
I've been in touch with mates in Bristol about this. There were several local meetings about this Tesco, but the problem was that tesco already owned the site and already had the relevant permissions - I figured there was little point putting loads of effort in to stop this particular Tesco, given the deal was already done. The most disappointing thing was that only one of the local traders turned up to the first meeting....

As for Stokes Croft, despite that terrific night of local action, the tesco is there, open, and doing business. :(

Anyway, there's another Tesco in the pipeline about 150m up towards at the end of Brixton Road in the Kennington Business Centre. This is probably where it's worth putting the effort in......

oh, my friend works in there, so she can do her shopping after work :D if she doesn't want to use the new Sainsbury's on Brixton Hill, or the new Tesco in the Russell, or M&S, Sainsbury's, Iceland

Decidedly unimpressed with the new shop

I went yesterday to observe and because those nice (!) people at Tesco sent me a £2 voucher to spend in the shop - had a look around and there was very little food that I wanted to buy, just shelf upon shelf of tins and packaged food. I know this is to be expected but I thought with this one being a bit bigger than many nearby (especially the one at the Stockwell Esso garage) they could offer a better range.

Worst was the newspapers which were strewn across the racks and hardly any of them had the right contents (eg no magazines in the Guardians, Times didnt have all the supplements etc) which would really annoy me if I had decided to buy my paper there. Staffing seemed a bit erratic too - when I arrived there were three checkout staff and no queue but when I departed not having bought anything there was only one checkout staff member and a queue of five or six people. So I dont think I will be going back.

Best thing is the shop has a well constructed area to leave bikes out the front

I've done a short feature on The Russell Hotel over on my site Oval History, link here.

Interesting and confirms what I said years ago on here that it used to be called Brady's :D

From the 1930′s until the early 1990′s the Russell Hotel was owned by the Brady family who even changed it’s name to Brady’s for a time. In the 1980′s the pub was known to be the roughest in the area and was the scene of many fights and shootings, not exactly your friendly neighbourhood boozer. After Brady’s sold up and moved to Atlantic Road the pub went through several changes of ownership and by 2003 was closed and boarded up.

One of the landlords before it closed was the same guy who ran the George IV on Brixton Hill.
