If the stated purpose is to 'create a visual representation of the massive overrepresentation of black people being routinely stopped', then it seems a bit odd that they're only asking for pictures of black people who've been stopped and searched.

Wouldn't a token white face make more of a point about overrepresentation? Or - even better - a sample balanced to reflect the levels of overrepresentation in stop and search, juxtaposed with pictures / a picture showing what a representative sample would look like? An all-black sample gives no context, no background, no idea of what proportionate representation would be... Let alone what 'overrepresentation' means, or the extent of it.

Sorry but the first thing to came to mind reading this post was "is this some new kind of porn"

:(

Kinda spammy, kinda worthwhile. Debateable (as in "causes debate"). Moved to appropriate forum. I think. Enjoy.

What's the fucking point?

The government releases figures stating that black people are over represented in the stop & search figures.

(Though some criminologists have contended that the numbers represent the actual on-the-streets populations of a given area, though not necessarily representing their demographic / census / etc makeup. I've never engaged with the issue enough to have an opinion, but I'm aware there has been / was / is a strand of research / thought along those lines. The name Waddington is lurking at the back of my brain - but he might have nothing whatsoever to do with it.)

Can I reassure you this in not spam - neither is it porn! Its genuine attempt to challenge the use of discriminatory stop and search powers. As for the many begging question feel free to ask.

Do you oppose stop and search powers from PACE per se? Or just the disproportionate targeting of young black men? Do you oppose the creeping powers of the various sections of the terrorism act to avoid reasonable suspicion issues from PACE?

Should it not be pictures of all Stop and Search rather than those of persons of a specific racial type, then the visual impact would demonstrate any racial biase?

Really open to suggetstions about arriving at the best visual impact. However the figures are massively disproportionate and that point has to be in some way articulated in some oher way as to dramitcally demonstrate the point. COuld do it simply with black dots white dots i suppose. That might be an idea!

Reasonable use of S&S supported. Stops that do not require ' reasonable suspicsion ' not governed by PACE not supported.

I have to say that with the continued increase in these figures t I am thinking about opposing the power per se as it seem incapable of being used without abuse, even under PACE, despite huge efforts in challenging its discriminatory use. Sorry for arguing with myself but its where my heads at with this issues at the mo.

Have the people being photographed given their consent to their picture being used in this way?

Just a thought: will people taking photos of the police be in violation of that new 'anti-terror-don't-take-photos' law? Well, of course they wouldn't be, but I wonder if the police will start using it all over the place like they have other "anti-terror" legislation eg section 44 (Terrorism Act 2000)?

I don't think it's a bad idea, especially, if done carefully. And I agree that taking photos of anyone being sussed is a better idea, as it will indeed give an indicator of the scale of the problem - especially if you give the reader/viewer the percentile population of white to black in this country / area.

I saw a white person being sussed the other day and remember thinking, blimey, i havent seen a white person being searched in bloody years.

A new British anti-terrorism law went into effect Monday 16th February that could effectively bar photographers from taking pictures of police or military personnel.
Any ideas how it might fit with this?

yes anothe rgood point but with todays technology phones ect one should be able to do this unoticed but may have to think of legal advice if they are challenged. Thanks

Good point - do they need to give their permission if there are on the street?
If someone is in public then it is legally OK to take photos of them, and you don't need to have consent.

The police officers are a different matter.

Fuck it - just start putting up photos. If need be you can blur out the faces to give the people being S&Sed a bit of privacy, while still making the point you want to.
